Ben Roethlisberger No. 5 in QB rankings

By Scott Brown

PITTSBURGH -- ESPN NFL senior writer John Clayton has released his rankings for the top 32 quarterbacks in the league, and Ben Roethlisberger is fifth behind Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Clayton’s rankings reflect the importance of a quarterback’s body of work. Matt Schaub, for example, completes the top 10 while Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson are in Clayton’s next tier, as is Cam Newton.

Some might argue that No. 5 is too high for Roethlisberger but I think that is about right for the 10-year veteran. He is one of only three active quarterbacks to win multiple Super Bowls, and Brady is the only active quarterback to play in more Super Bowls than Roethlisberger.

Big Ben’s winning percentage in the regular-season is a tick higher than Peyton Manning’s (.690 to .688) and, as Clayton pointed out, he looks primed for a big season in 2013.

Roethlisberger was on his way to his best statistical season in 2012 before suffering shoulder and rib injuries. He was not the same after missing three games, and threw a couple of brutal interceptions late in the season.

But Roethlisberger still finished with the second-best touchdown to interception ratio -- 26 to 8 -- of his career, and he will have a chance to carry the Steelers’ offense this season.
