Wake-up caw: Pitta returning next month?

By Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta is not expected to return until mid- to late-November, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

This would be an extremely positive development for the Ravens, who have never publicly guaranteed that Pitta would play this season. It's previously been estimated that Pitta would come back in December at the earliest.

Pitta, the Ravens' top returning pass catcher, is on the injured reserve-designated for return list after having hip surgery early in training camp. He made his first appearance on the practice field on Oct. 4, catching passes from the JUGS machine.

"I've got to be honest with you, I’m pretty impressed," coach John Harbaugh said at the time. "That’s a ways away time-wise."

Pitta was eligible to return to practice on Oct. 21 and, under the designated for return rules, he could play in the Week 9 game at the Cleveland Browns. But no one expects him to be ready by that point.

For Pitta, who was once considered out for the season, it's remarkable that there is even a chance of him catching passes from Joe Flacco this season.
