Power Rankings: No. 24 Pittsburgh Steelers
By Scott Brown
A weekly examination of the Steelers’ ESPN.com Power Ranking:
Preseason: 16 | Last Week: 27 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002
The Pittsburgh Steelers moved up three spots after their most complete game of the season. The Steelers' defense and special teams shined in a 23-10 win against the Buffalo Bills, and the offense ground out 136 rushing yards while quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 204 yards and a touchdown. The Steelers (3-6) are now ahead of two teams that beat them earlier this season, the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings. Here is a breakdown of the voting:
Ashley Fox: 24
Mike Sando: 20
Kevin Seifert: 25
John Clayton: 26
Dan Graziano: 23
Jamison Hensley: 23
The Steelers should make a significant jump next week if they can beat the visiting Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Lions have lost their past eight games in Pittsburgh dating back to 1966, but they are 6-3 and are No. 9 in the rankings. If the Steelers can manage to neutralize the Lions offense and extend Detroit’s misery in Pittsburgh, things could get interesting.
Their next three games are against teams with losing records, including two in the AFC North. The Steelers, however, know better than anyone not to get ahead of themselves as they followed a two-game winning streak earlier this season with back-to-back road disasters.
