Wake-up caw: Rice reportedly drops weight

Running back Ray Rice has dropped 15 pounds since the end of the season by changing his workout regimen and diet, his personal trainer told The Baltimore Sun. Rice, who finished the season at 225 pounds, wants to start the 2014 season at 205 pounds, his trainer said.

"Outside of the eyeball test, Ray has looked explosive and is cutting on a dime," trainer Kyle Jakobe said. "We haven't seen that since the the third week of last season. Ray played last year at 10 to 16 pounds over where we like him."

Rice's lack of explosiveness was evident in 2013, when he managed one run of more than 20 yards. He averaged 3.1 yards per carry, which was better than just two other starting running backs.

The trainer contradicts the comments made by Rice, who insisted during the season that his struggles were the result of a hip injury, not extra pounds.

"For me, I've never had a problem with my weight or anything," Rice said in October. "I come into the season at a certain weight. Actually, I do my best to keep it on. It hasn't been a problem with me in terms of my conditioning and everything else."

Of course, losing weight is not Rice's biggest issue this offseason. He is facing charges of simple assault-domestic violence after an altercation at an Atlantic City, N.J., casino last month.
