The AFC North blog continues its series on getting to know incoming rookies from the 2011 draft class.
Here is the full scouting report, courtesy of the well-respected draft guide of The Sporting News:
Strengths: Has surprising quickness, flexibility and agility. Pass blocks with a good base. Slides to the corner in time to cut off speed rushers. Uses good strength and long arms to eliminate his man from the play. Has strength to thwart the defender and open holes for the running back.
Weaknesses: Gets beaten and pushed around by defenders too often. Does not punch aggressively or get good hand placement in pass protection. Has a bad habit of stopping his feet and reaching, and gets beaten around the corner often.
Those are good strengths but also pretty bad weaknesses Gilbert needs to improve if he wants to protect two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Share your thoughts on Gilbert joining the Steelers in the comment section below.
