NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 15
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | We're going to win the division! It's going to come down to that Week 17 game in Washington, and with DeMarco Murray back we have what was missing on Thanksgiving. I can't believe it, but this Cowboys team is going to the playoffs!!! | It's not good to assume victory over the Redskins, who are the hottest team in the NFC and should have Robert Griffin III back by then. But in general, yeah. Cowboys fans have lots of reasons to feel happy with their team. They are playing well, and tough, and they're worth being proud of. |
![]() | We're still going to win the division. The Giants do this all the time -- make things look as bleak as possible before turning it around at just the right time. They're the only team in the division that can make any noise in the playoffs, and those other teams will slip up. The Giants will be fine. | I'm not so sure. Lots of alarm bells in that loss to the Falcons on Sunday. That's the kind of game in which the Giants usually show well, but they didn't show at all. You have to face the possibility that, when they reach down deep for that little extra this time, it might not be there. |
![]() | What? We have to watch two more games? This is agony. Just end the season already and get rid of Andy Reid. Everybody in the division's tied for first but us. This is like a nightmare. | Yeah, two more weeks. On the bright side, if the Eagles actually wake up and start playing well, they can help decide who wins and loses the division. They get Washington this week and New York the next. Spoilers, baby! |
![]() | We're going to win the division! It's going to come down to that Week 17 game against the Cowboys, and we crushed them on Thanksgiving. I can't believe it, but this Redskins team is going to the playoffs!!! | It's not safe to assume victory over the Cowboys, who are one of the hottest teams in the NFC and are winning tough games with clutch, late-game play on both sides of the ball. But in general, yeah. Redskins fans have lots of reasons to feel happy with their team. They are playing well, and tough, and they're making December fun again in Washington. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Winning beats losing, but the victory over Detroit will only cost Arizona a shot at landing a franchise quarterback. Draft order is all that's left for this team. | The Cardinals' 4-0 start pretty much removed the team from consideration for the top overall choice. Arizona could wind up picking around the 10th spot, same as where the team found Matt Leinart in 2006. |
![]() | A sixth Lombardi trophy sure will look nice in the entryway to 49ers headquarters. The only question is where to place it relative to the others in the trophy case. Decisions, decisions. | Now, now. Let's not count our punt returns before they're caught. The 49ers do look like they have championship potential, but there are never any guarantees. Justin Smith's injury is potentially troubling. |
![]() | Move over, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Russell Wilson is the new favorite for offensive rookie of the year after accounting for four touchdowns during a 50-17 blasting of the Buffalo Bills. | This race isn't finished yet, but Wilson cannot be considered a heavy underdog at this point. He's been better than Luck or Griffin over the last nine weeks. He leads the NFL in Total QBR (85.1) while ranking second to Aaron Rodgers in passer rating over that span. |
![]() | Same old Rams. Just when you think this team is going to turn a corner, it wrecks the season by getting blown out at home on Fan Appreciation Day. Ridiculous. | Deep breaths, deep breaths. The Rams have already tripled their victory total from last season. The season is a success already. And with two road games remaining, expectations shouldn't run too high. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | The end of this Bears nucleus is nigh. | It remains to be seen whether the Bears are headed to an offseason of tweaks or a complete overhaul. They have a reasonable chance to make the playoffs if they win their final two games. But the team that walked off the field Sunday seemed defeated -- literally, physically and emotionally. |
![]() | Somebody needs to get fired after a blowout loss to the Arizona Cardinals. | There is no doubt Sunday's game was the low point of Jim Schwartz's tenure with the team. But other than the Matt Millen fiasco, the Lions' history is littered with giving up on coaches and changing course at the first sign of trouble. It sounds good to call for a mass firing, but in some cases patience must rule over emotion. |
![]() | Place-kicker Mason Crosby could cost the Packers a playoff game. | Crosby hasn't been consistent since the early part of the season. He has missed 12 field goals already this season, and it is only coincidental that they did not cost the Packers a victory. Their patience is laudable, but it is beginning to border on blind faith. |
![]() | Adrian Peterson is going to break Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105 rushing yards in a season. | Peterson needs 294 yards in two games to do it. That sounds like a lot, but what about Peterson's season so far has been predictable or even reasonable? |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yasinskas | ||
![]() | The Falcons are peaking at the right time and are headed for the Super Bowl. | Sunday's win against the New York Giants was highly encouraging, and it could signal that the Falcons have elevated their game. But let's see them play like that in the postseason before making grand declarations. |
![]() | Coach Ron Rivera has saved his job. | Back-to-back wins against Atlanta and San Diego certainly have helped Rivera's chances. If the Panthers play well in their final two games, Rivera probably keeps his job. |
![]() | Sunday's shutout of Tampa Bay was a sign the Saints' defense has been fixed. | It was a nice outing, but let's not get carried away. The Bucs' offense has gone into a horrible slump, and the New Orleans defense still needs some offseason work. |
![]() | Josh Freeman isn't the long-term answer at quarterback. | Freeman has struggled mightily of late. But the Bucs still have a lot invested in him, and he'll get every benefit of the doubt. Still, Freeman needs to bounce back in the final two games to build some positive momentum for next season. |
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 14
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | Walker, can the U.S. block Chan Gailey at the border? We don't want him back in Buffalo. He can stay in Toronto after that performance! | To my knowledge Gailey did make it back to Bills headquarters. But after losing 50-17 to Seattle, I'm not so sure he coaches beyond this season. These final two games are big. |
![]() | Walker, I'm convinced Brian Hartline is a legit No. 1 receiver. He just had his first 1,000-yard season. | Hartline is a solid No. 2 option, but he will aim to get paid like a No. 1 in free agency next year. Do you think the Dolphins throw the money truck at Hartline? |
![]() | Walker, the Patriots blew their chance for a first-round bye. They won't win the Super Bowl. | The Patriots no longer control their own destiny for a bye, but there's still two weeks left. This team is good enough to win at home or on the road. And it's just a matter of who gets hot in January. |
![]() | Walker, I don't care how much the Jets guaranteed Mark Sanchez next year. If he's the starting quarterback, I'm going to puke! | Well, the Jets are stuck with Sanchez for better or worse in 2013. He will be on the roster, either as a starter or one of the league's most expensive backups at $8.25 million. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | The Broncos will win out and will get a bye. | I don't see Denver losing at home to the Browns or the Chiefs. Expect the Broncos to finish the job and get the bye. |
![]() | Sunday's 15-0 shutout loss at Oakland was a new on-field low for the 2-12 Chiefs. | No doubt. They garnered 119 yards of offense and were shut down by a defense that has been one of the worst scoring defenses in the NFL. The Chiefs are simply awful. |
![]() | The fact is Terrelle Pryor played just a few snaps, which means the Raiders simply see him as a wrinkle option and not a full-time option at this point. | I think that point is clear. I don't think Oakland brass trusts Pryor enough to think it is worth seeing him start right now. |
![]() | Ryan Mathews' latest injury -- he broke his clavicle and is out for the rest of the season -- is proof the third-year running back will never make a big difference. | There is no doubt, Mathews' injury issues are a concern. I don't want to write him off yet, but next season is a crucial one. If he can't get it together next year, the Chargers may have to cut bait. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens are in the playoffs but they're not a playoff team. They've lost three in a row, including getting routed by Denver. There is no way this team is going to win a playoff game, much less make a serious run at the Super Bowl. | Injuries and Joe Flacco's struggles have been the Ravens' downfall in December. There's always a chance Flacco can bounce back. But if the Ravens can't get healthy on defense, Baltimore will have trouble winning anything in the postseason. |
![]() | The Bengals are ready to take over the AFC North. They're younger than the Ravens and Steelers, and they're playing better than them. Cincinnati has won five of its past six games and is playing its best heading into the playoffs. | Even though the Bengals currently hold the final playoff spot in the AFC, they've haven't clinched anything yet. They still have to go to Pittsburgh on Sunday. Andy Dalton is 0-3 against the Steelers in his career. |
![]() | Brandon Weeden is too old to develop. He got outplayed by Redskins rookie Kirk Cousins, a quarterback picked three rounds after Weeden. If you're changing the general manager and coach, you might as well change the quarterback, too. | A new coach and general manager may prefer to have "their guy" at quarterback. But there aren't a lot of options out there. Do you really want Michael Vick or Matt Barkley throwing passes for Cleveland next season? |
![]() | This looks like a team in turmoil rather than a Super Bowl contender. Ben Roethlisberger is questioning the play calling. Rashard Mendenhall, the leading rusher for the previous three seasons, was suspended. Too much drama for December. | These problems surface when a team loses four of five games. But the Steelers can't lose sight of the fact that they remain in control of their playoff fate. They're in the postseason if they win the next two games. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | J.J. Watt is having the greatest defensive season in the history of the world. I remember saying how much I love that pick. | That's funny, I remember you booing. He's been phenomenal. I have to look at Lawrence Taylor's MVP season for comparison. |
![]() | Man, we don't measure up very well to the Texans. I love this team and the story it's writing, but it's awfully hard to see the Colts winning in the postseason. | Getting in is a giant deal, and the Colts are on the verge of that. You get in and take your chances. There are upsets every year. Why not Indy? |
![]() | Man, this is miserable. We can't even report a tackle eligible correctly. Looks like we're going to draft No. 2, which at least means we can't screw up the No. 1 pick. | There may be no singular player at the top of the draft, but Jacksonville absolutely has to find a difference-maker wherever it is picking. |
![]() | Hey, we can still beat a really bad team that serves us up five turnovers. Jake Locker had one nice drive, but he's sure not making me feel confident long-term. | I expected this team to be 2-1 in its final three games. So far it's on pace. It's not huge, but it's something. |

NFL: Week 14 knee-jerk reactions
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 14
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | Wait. We've won four out of five? How did that happen with our horrible coach and our horrible quarterback and our horrible owner who's killing the franchise by insisting on being his own GM? I thought I hated this team. What gives? | The Cowboys are playing pretty well, and although the rest of the schedule isn't easy, they have played their way into the hunt for both the division title and the wild-card spot. If you look at this as a building-block season in Dallas (as you should), it's turned encouraging. |
![]() | Chatter all you want, Cowboys and Redskins fans. We're still the champs until you take it from us. We still have a one-game lead and we just dropped 52 on Drew Brees and his gang with our backup running back. | All of that is true, but the Giants' season still comes down to two tough road games the next two weeks in Atlanta and Baltimore and then a home finale against the Eagles, who have won eight of their past nine against them. The Giants remain favorites, but they're far from taking it all home. |
![]() | Nick Foles! Nick Foles! Did you see the way he came back in the fourth quarter! Is it possible we've found our new quarterback? | Sure, it's possible. Foles did look poised and sharp when it mattered most. But he also was doing it against the league's worst pass defense, so let's not assume all of the kinks are worked out just yet. Foles has three more games to audition for next year, and they may not go as well as Sunday's did. |
![]() | Hey, uh those Robert Griffin III MRI results he's gonna be OK, right? Right????? | It sounds as though Griffin has dodged a serious knee injury, but it remains possible that he'll have to miss this week's game against the red-hot Browns. Kirk Cousins looked fine in relief, but can he handle a whole game against a good defense like Cleveland's? The season could rest on the answer. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | The Cardinals' nine-game losing streak and 58-0 defeat at Seattle proves this team needs more than a new quarterback. Arizona needs a total organizational overhaul from the general manager on down. This franchise is in trouble. | The evidence is piling up, no doubt. Arizona has fallen behind its division rivals at quarterback. The other NFC West teams appear to have stronger general managers, too. Coach Ken Whisenhunt talks about having a proven formula, but that formula hasn't worked without Kurt Warner. |
![]() | There's something a little unsettling about the 49ers as they recast their identity with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. Do they have the same formula for success that served them so well? The team still hasn't won more than two in a row. | We'll find out soon enough. Trips to New England and Seattle over the next two weeks will largely define this regular season for San Francisco. It's tough to know what to expect. |
![]() | Seattle is hotter than the 49ers at this point and should be able to unseat San Francisco for the NFC West crown with a little help from New England in Week 15. Victories over Buffalo (in Toronto), San Francisco (home) and St. Louis (home) should do it. | If the Seahawks are for real, they'll win the game against Buffalo and then run the table at home. Anything less than that would expose the Seahawks as a young team not quite ready to take the next step. That wouldn't be such a bad thing, either, given where the team has been previously. |
![]() | Don't anoint the 49ers and Seahawks as the only playoff teams from the NFC West just yet. The Rams are 4-0-1 against the division. Their current three-game winning streak makes them the hottest team in the West. This race isn't over yet. | The Rams have a good thing going. It's true that their current winning streak is longer than any for the 49ers or Seahawks this season. St. Louis hasn't been consistent enough offensively to inspire a ton of confidence in its running the table, however. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | This team is cooked. | The Bears started 7-1, beating two teams that currently have winning records, and now have lost four of their past five. They currently hold the sixth and final NFC playoff spot but are a team going in the wrong direction at the wrong time. They need to win at least two, if not all, of their three remaining games to qualify for the playoffs. They'll need to do so with a roster full of aging and injured veterans. Tough duty. |
![]() | The Lions need to lose Sunday at the Arizona Cardinals to help their draft positioning. | It's once again come down to this for the Lions, who are one of five 4-9 teams in the NFL at the moment. The Cardinals are one of them. Only three teams have worse records, which means the Lions are in contention for a top-5 pick in the draft. You can do the math. |
![]() | The Packers are going to win the NFC North in a runaway. | After starting 2-3, the Packers have won seven of their past eight games to overtake the Bears. They'll have a chance to clinch the division Sunday at Soldier Field against a Bears team that has lost four of five. There is no question who has the momentum. |
![]() | Adrian Peterson is going to rush for 2,000 yards this season. | If willpower is the driving force, there is no doubt how this story will end. Peterson's season is one of the all-time comebacks in sports history. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yaskinskas | ||
![]() | The Falcons are poised for another playoff fiasco after Sunday's loss to Carolina exposed numerous flaws. | History could end up repeating itself. But it's also possible this Week 14 loss might be a much-needed wake-up call for Atlanta. |
![]() | The victory against Atlanta will be enough to save Ron Rivera's job. | A single win, although very significant, isn't going to save Rivera's job. But it puts him in a much better position. If the Panthers can play well in their last three games, Rivera has a chance. |
![]() | Drew Brees has lost it -- he's thrown nine interceptions in the past three games. | Relax. Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league. His receivers and offensive line haven't been doing a great job, and that's prompted Brees to force too many throws. |
![]() | Maybe Josh Freeman isn't a franchise quarterback. | There's no doubt Freeman's performance against Philadelphia was bad. But this guy has made a lot of progress this season, and it seems very likely the Bucs will try to sign him to a contract extension after the season. |
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 14
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | Walker, my 10-year-old can coach better than Chan Gailey. I will lose my mind if I have to watch him for another season. | Sunday's home loss to the Rams was inexcusable, and Gailey's head-scratching decisions are to blame. But his future probably rests on the final three games. |
![]() | Walker, the Dolphins are playing tough but losing -- and I'm OK with that. | That's probably the best way to look at things. This is a rebuilding year for Miami and the team showed some good things, but there's plenty left to fix. |
![]() | Walker, I already bought my plane ticket to New Orleans a couple of weeks ago. Now, I'm getting ready for the title parade in Boston the following week. | Make no mistake, New England's win against Houston makes the Patriots the AFC favorites. But anything can happen in a one-game scenario in the playoffs. |
![]() | Walker, I can't believe what I'm about to say. But I think the Jets will make the p--p--p--playoffs! | The Jets have won two in a row and are only one game out of the final wild-card spot in the AFC. They have an easy schedule and certainly have a shot. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | Denver's red zone woes in Oakland will be a major problem moving forward. The Broncos were just 2-of-7 in the red zone against the Raiders. | It is an area the Broncos need to fix. But this is Peyton Manning we're talking about. He'll fix it moving toward the playoffs. |
![]() | Running back Jamaal Charles just had his third straight 100-yard rushing game, and he has 1,220 rushing yards this season after tearing his ACL. He is the best running back in the AFC West. | No question about it. Charles is special and he's clearly ahead of the likes of Darren McFadden, Ryan Mathews and the injured Willis McGahee in the division. |
![]() | Oakland's defense has allowed 46 points in the past two games after giving up 169 points in the four previous games. This Raiders' defense is improving. | Well, the points explosion has slowed, but Oakland's defense is still leaky and it will be seriously reconstructed after the season. |
![]() | The Chargers played hard for coach Norv Turner and won in Pittsburgh on Sunday. The win will help to save Turner's job. | No chance. Not going to happen. Unless the 5-8 Chargers somehow make the playoffs, Turner is on his way out. It was a nice win in Pittsburgh, but it won't change the bottom line. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens are in panic mode. They've lost two straight and fired their offensive coordinator. Even if Baltimore gets into the playoffs, this team won't be making any noise in the postseason. | The Ravens haven't looked like a playoff team in more than a month and they're backing their way into the playoffs. But they can turn things around before the postseason begins by showing championship mettle in season-ending games against three playoff contenders: the Broncos, Giants and Bengals. |
![]() | The Bengals are still the Bengals. Every time you start to believe in this team, it lets you down. There's no excuse for losing a nine-point, fourth-quarter lead to the Cowboys. | The Bengals lost a golden opportunity to take over that final playoff spot in the AFC, but that disappointing loss hasn't changed their chances of making the postseason. Cincinnati still has to beat the Steelers next week to make the playoffs for a second consecutive season. |
![]() | The Browns are playoff contenders. They've won three straight and can finish 8-8 if they win their next three. Pat Shurmur has earned the right to remain head coach for 2013. | Cleveland has certainly surprised everyone with this late run after starting the season 0-5. But winning at Denver and Pittsburgh to finish the season is a tall order. The Browns, though, have raised expectations for next season. |
![]() | A mature team like the Steelers shouldn't be this inconsistent. Pittsburgh can win at the Ravens with Charlie Batch but loses at home to the Chargers with Ben Roethlisberger? This is a bad sign, especially when a letdown like this happens in December. | The biggest problem for the Steelers is that they play down to the level of their competition. Luckily for the Steelers, the next two opponents (Dallas and Cincinnati) have winning records, and the season finale is against the suddenly hot Browns. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | We are toast. This great season is going to wind up an illusion. No way we can beat the Patriots in a rematch. | It was an awful showing. But Houston is allowed to recover and do better next time. |
![]() | We're going to win the division. How crazy is that? Houston is the team that will be tight on Sunday. | Settle down. Beating the Texans twice is a super tall order. |
![]() | Just our luck. We can get the No. 1 pick in a year there is no clear-cut No. 1 pick. | There will be big value up there. But yeah, it would have been a lot better to have stunk last year. |
![]() | Mike Munchak says this team is better than 4-9. Yet I look at the standings and it says the Titans are 4-9. | You are what your record is. Saying otherwise equals spin. Own it better. |

Twitter Double Coverage: Texans vs. Pats
Getty Images, USA TODAY SportsNew England quarterback Tom Brady faces off with Houston's Matt Schaub in a fight for AFC dominance this Monday night. Two of the NFL’s top teams will meet at Gillette Stadium when the New England Patriots host the Houston Texans on “Monday Night Football.”
This game has huge playoff implications for both teams. The Texans (11-1) and Patriots (9-3) currently hold the top two seeds in the AFC. But the Baltimore Ravens (9-3) and Denver Broncos (9-3) also are vying for the top two seeds, which includes a first-round bye.
There are great matchups all over the field in this game. Can Houston quarterback Matt Schaub out-duel Patriots quarterback Tom Brady? Will New England’s secondary shut down Houston Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson? Will Texans standout defensive end J.J. Watt be a disruptive force?
The winner of Monday’s Patriots-Texans game likely will be the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl in February. ESPN.com AFC East blogger James Walker (@ESPN_AFCEast) and AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky (@ESPN_AFCSouth) discussed the various angles Wednesday on Twitter.
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 13
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | Am I crazy to think this team has a shot at the playoffs? Only one game out of the last wild-card spot, and not even out of the division race yet. If they could just put two good halves together one of these weeks! | The reality is, 6-6 is in the race (though the head-to-head loss to 7-5 Seattle hurts). But the Cowboys need to play very tough the next two weeks against tough, physical AFC North teams, and tough and physical isn't their game. Still a ways from celebrating. |
![]() | What the heck? We had this, right? Only good team in the division. Should have put it away weeks ago. Now I'm starting to think this is going to be a repeat of 2009 and 2010, not 2011. | The loss to the Redskins brought this possibility back into play. The Giants still hold the division lead, but with games still to go against the Saints, Falcons, Ravens and perennial nemesis Eagles, it won't be easy. |
![]() | Uh ... Let me see if the Sixers are on. | Just waiting for the clock to run out in Philadelphia at this point. No reason to think the Eagles will win any of their last four games, and the only remaining drama is who'll be the next coach and how high (currently fourth) they'll pick in the draft. Yowza. |
![]() | RG3! RG3! RG3! We're a game out in the division, a game out in the wild card, hold all the tiebreakers and ... well ... RG3!!! Redskins to the Super Bowl!!!!! | They look really good, and they just went 3-0 against division teams at a critical time of the year. The defense is held together with chicken wire, but it's working. How much chicken wire do they have? |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Ken Whisenhunt cannot possibly survive what is now his third consecutive season with a losing streak of at least six games. Ryan Lindley? Really? This cannot end well. | That might not be far from the truth. An eight-game losing streak and no progress at quarterback isn't the way for a coach to state his case for a seventh season on the job. |
![]() | Jim Harbaugh blew it. He messed with a good thing when he benched Alex Smith. Colin Kaepernick showed against the Rams he's not ready for prime time. Way to wreck the season, coach. | Lots of coaches make safe decisions to buffer themselves from potential criticism. Harbaugh made a bold move. He'll take the heat if this QB decision fails to produce a deep playoff run. |
![]() | How many quarterbacks in Seahawks history could lead 97- and 80-yard drives against the Bears' defense to win at Soldier Field? I'll take your answer off the air. | Russell Wilson might be the only one. The early evidence suggests he'll be the first legitimate franchise quarterback the Seahawks have drafted and developed. |
![]() | Beating the 49ers shows the Rams can hang with anyone. They'll beat the Bills this week. They can beat or have beaten every team on their schedule. Playoffs or bust, baby. | The Rams are 4-0-1 inside the division and 1-6 outside it. Their lone remaining division game is at Seattle, where the Seahawks are 5-0. St. Louis lost at home to Mark Sanchez and the Jets, so let's hold off on the parade for now. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | The Bears' defense is old. | It sure looked that way in the fourth quarter and overtime against the Seattle Seahawks and rookie quarterback Russell Wilson. Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher (hamstring), outside linebacker Lance Briggs (ankle) and cornerback Charles Tillman (foot) are all nursing injuries. Defensive end Julius Peppers isn't on the injury report but has taken veteran rest days during the practice week to ensure he is fresh for game day. |
![]() | The Lions are a lot further away than they appeared at the end of last season. | The Lions have talent, but perhaps not as much as they thought. They have a strong nucleus, but it probably isn't as deep as they hoped. When you follow up 10-6 with 4-8, you have to question which one is the mirage. |
![]() | The Green Bay Packers will never be healthy this season. | It doesn't appear to be their year to maintain a consistent lineup. Receiver Greg Jennings finally returned after nearly two months away, but in the same game receiver Jordy Nelson reinjured his hamstring. That's the way it's gone this season for the Packers. |
![]() | The Christian Ponder era is a failure. | It's too early to say that. But Ponder is close to putting the Vikings in a really tough spot this offseason. If he can't finish the season strong, the Vikings will have to take a big leap of faith to give him an unquestioned third year as their starter. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yasinskas | ||
![]() | Atlanta's defense is coming together at the right time. | It sure seems like coordinator Mike Nolan's system is taking hold. In their last two games, the Falcons have shut down running back Doug Martin and produced five interceptions from Drew Brees. That's the type of defensive play we haven't seen from the Falcons in recent years. |
![]() | The Panthers have the worst defense in the division. | The numbers say New Orleans and Tampa Bay are far worse, but sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story. The defense was responsible for the loss at Kansas City because it couldn't keep the Chiefs' offense off the field. |
![]() | After throwing a career-high five interceptions against Atlanta, it seems even Drew Brees is having a bad season. | There's no question Brees had a horrible game, and putting him against the Giants' pass rush this week is a bit scary. But Brees is just as capable of throwing five touchdowns as he is five interceptions. |
![]() | Sunday's loss to Denver pretty much ends Tampa Bay's playoff hopes. | The loss certainly didn't help, but the Bucs remain very much in the playoff picture. At 6-6, they're only one win off the pace for the final wild-card spot. But they may have to run the table to get into the postseason. |

![]() | The Bills are hot. They will run the table and make the playoffs. | The Bills have won two of three and that's not hot enough. At 5-7, they would need a lot of luck to even have a chance at the playoffs. It's a wrap. |
![]() | I keep going back and forth on this Ryan Tannehill guy. One week I think he's Dan Marino, and the next week I think he's another Chad Henne. Which is it? | Well, Tannehill is neither. Let's not put too many expectations on his going to the Hall of Fame. But also don't label him a draft bust after each bad game as a rookie. |
![]() | I'm getting a little worried, Walker. The Patriots scored only 23 points when I'm used to them scoring 40 points. Is my bar too high? | Relax, Patriots fans. New England won't light up the scoreboard every week. Miami's defense is tough at home. New England will be fine. |
![]() | Greg McElroy for president! He's much better than those two tomato cans: Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. | Let's keep McElroy's performance in perspective. He threw for only 29 yards in New York's 7-6 victory. Let's not crown him as the next Tom Brady just yet. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | Denver is going to get the No. 2 seed and a bye in the AFC playoffs now that it is 9-3 and tied with Baltimore and New England for the second-best record in the conference. | Not so fast. Yes, Denver has an NFL-high seven-game winning streak and is playing at a high level. But New England and Baltimore won't roll over. The Broncos have to keep on winning if they expect to get the bye. |
![]() | Brady Quinn should be considered a candidate to start next year after having the best Total QBR game of any Kansas City quarterback in the past five years in a win against Carolina. | Let's see if he can keep it up. If Quinn can be efficient and timely in the final four games, maybe he can be considered a contender for the job next year, but I think the Chiefs will look for a new starter. |
![]() | There is a legitimate chance Dennis Allen will last just one season in Oakland. | I'm starting to think it's a real possibility. If the 3-9 Raiders go winless in the final four games, owner Mark Davis will have a hard timing finding a reason to keep Allen. I think he needs another year, but it's not my call. |
![]() | The Chargers could go 4-12 and end up losing 11 of their final 12 games. | Why not? Does this team look capable of winning a game right now? Offensively, it is a mess, and the defense folds in the fourth quarter. I don't think the Chargers will go winless the rest of the season, but it is clearly possible. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens lost to a third-string quarterback at home. How can anyone expect them to beat RG3, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning and Andy Dalton the rest of this month? That Steelers loss has created a lot of doubts. | The loss to the Steelers is deflating, especially because it came against an undermanned division rival. But the Ravens can still clinch a playoff berth Sunday with a win at Washington and can make a run at the No. 2 seed in the AFC by beating the Broncos. |
![]() | The Bengals have won four in a row. That comeback in San Diego shows this is a special team. Cincinnati is more than a playoff contender -- it's a Super Bowl contender. | The Bengals are one of the hottest teams in the league, but let's take a deep breath. Cincinnati shouldn't be able to say "Super Bowl" until these Bengals players win a playoff game first. Still, you have to be impressed with how the running game and defense have bounced back. |
![]() | The Browns have won four of their past seven games and are starting to look like a team on the upswing in 2013. Maybe the Browns shouldn't get rid of Pat Shurmur as head coach. | The new regime probably decided to part ways with Shurmur long before the Browns started to turn things around. The Browns already have pushed out president Mike Holmgren, and they probably will fire general manager Tom Heckert after the season. It's hard to believe Shurmur would survive the housecleaning. |
![]() | That win in Baltimore in going to catapult the Steelers. This is starting to look like 2005, when they won their last four games to make the playoffs as a wild-card team before winning the Super Bowl. | It's a nice story that the Steelers saved their season with a surprisingly strong effort by backup Charlie Batch. But the Steelers need Ben Roethlisberger to win the Super Bowl. His health will determine how far Pittsburgh goes in the postseason. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | With our beat up secondary Tom Brady is going to light us up. I see 11-2. | The Texans have become masters at finding a way to win, and that could happen in New England, too. |
![]() | Remember when we doubted the idea of letting Peyton Manning go and drafting Andrew Luck? Me neither. | It's hard to say anything bad about the Colts' future. Or their present. |
![]() | Is this thing over yet? | With four games left, it's about evaluating youth and QB Chad Henne. |
![]() | Fire everyone. And convince me in the next four games that QB Jake Locker is the guy. | A new staff isn't always the answer when things go bad. Let's see what they do in the last month of the season. |

WEEK 12
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | There's no hope as long as Jerry Jones owns the team. Losing to the Redskins on Thanksgiving? Why does this team keep finding new lows? | It's a roller-coaster season in Dallas, where the Cowboys aren't good enough or bad enough to sustain long streaks of either kind. Cowboys fans are likely to be feeling hopeful again this time next week. |
![]() | The real Giants are back! Did you see the way they manhandled the Packers? It's just like we've been saying all along -- when the Giants are on, they can beat any team in the league. | They can, yeah. But this whole idea that New York can flip a switch on or off when it wants is a scary one. Sometimes it works out, as it did in 2011. Sometimes it doesn't, as in 2009 and 2010. |
![]() | Well, at this point they really should just lose the rest of their games and try to get that No. 1 draft pick. Maybe we can find our franchise quarterback? | There's no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III in this year's draft, and this isn't an Eagles team that has quit. They could lose all the rest of their games for the simple reason that they stink. But they're not going to do it on purpose. |
![]() | This is amazing. All of the tiebreakers favor us. We beat the Saints, Vikings, Buccaneers and Cowboys, and we have the tiebreaker over Seattle, too. Only one game out with five to play -- we're going to the playoffs! | You have to be tied to use a tiebreaker, so although things look a lot better for the Redskins than they did a couple of weeks ago, they still need to keep winning and have the teams in front of them keep losing if they're going to sneak in. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Seven straight losses after a 4-0 start and no viable quarterback plan? That's it. Gotta fire the head coach. Ken Whisenhunt is out of excuses. | The schedule makes 4-12 seem more likely than 6-10. One key question is whether mounting injuries will give the organization reason to grant a mulligan. |
![]() | Coach Jim Harbaugh has screwed up the quarterback situation in a big way. How can Alex Smith or any veteran take him at his word after Harbaugh turned on Smith so quickly? | Colin Kaepernick has been much better than anticipated. He's the one responsible for creating the problem. And since when is it a problem to have two legitimately good QBs? |
![]() | Good teams don't go 1-5 on the road. The Seahawks are a fraud. They'll never make a dent in the playoffs as a wild-card team at this rate. | What did you expect, a 12-4 season? Seattle is building around one of the most impressive rookie QBs in the NFL. Simply reaching the playoffs should be enough. |
![]() | The Rams have allowed one touchdown pass while picking off seven passes and collecting 18 sacks against the NFC West. That's great, but something's wrong when a team can go 3-0-1 in its own division and 1-6 outside of it. | Take the victories any way you can get them, Rams fans. Those divisional stats are about as good as they're likely to look, anyway. The Rams get the 49ers on Sunday. They still have to visit Seattle, where Russell Wilson has 11 TDs and 0 INTs. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | The Bears are going to have trouble protecting Jay Cutler with a patchwork offensive line caused by injuries. | That's not necessarily the case. As we learned Sunday, protecting Cutler is just as much about play calling as pass protection. |
![]() | The Lions haven't grown at all since last season. | That's the unfortunate reality of a team going 4-7 a year after finishing 10-6 and going to the playoffs. The Lions thought their nucleus would continue to develop and brought it back almost intact, but that rarely works in the NFL. You must always keep moving forward. |
![]() | A 28-point loss to the New York Giants should be a warning sign. | I'm not sure about that. It's true the Packers haven't lost a game that badly in nearly four years. But in the end, it might have been the most daunting game remaining on their schedule. |
![]() | The Vikings aren't good enough to play with the big boys. | That sure appeared to be the case in their 28-10 loss to the Bears, and it won't get any easier over the next few weeks. They'll play at the Packers, host the Bears again, then travel to the Houston Texans two weeks after that. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yaskinskas | ||
![]() | The Falcons have solved their run-defense problems after holding back Tampa Bay's Doug Martin. | That was definitely a step in the right direction, and the return of linebacker Sean Weatherspoon from injury made the entire defense better. But this wasn't a team that was bottling up the run even before Weatherspoon's injury. |
![]() | Everything is fine with Cam Newton now. | At least for one night, Newton was pretty close to perfect. He ran for two touchdowns, passed for two touchdowns, and was poised and efficient. But not every opponent is as bad as the Eagles. |
![]() | It was a nice run, but the season is over for the Saints after Sunday's loss to the 49ers. | Not quite. The Saints have six losses and no room for more. The Saints pretty much have to run the table to have any shot at the playoffs, but you can bet they'll try to play the spoiler Thursday night in Atlanta. |
![]() | Sunday's loss to Atlanta really hurt the Buccaneers' playoff chances. | In the long run, that might be true. But at the moment, the 6-5 Bucs have the same record as Seattle and Minnesota, and the Seahawks would get the No. 6 based on tiebreakers. But there still is a lot of football to be played. |

| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | I can't remember the last time Chan Gailey made a good coaching decision. My mind is made up: Get Gailey outta here! | Lately, Gailey has certainly been more of the problem than the solution in Buffalo. If things don't turn around quickly, Gailey probably won't be back next year. |
![]() | Forget what I said about Chad Henne last week, Walker. I'm glad we drafted Ryan Tannehill. He's pretty cool. | Dolphins fans have to come to their senses about Tannehill. He's a rookie who will go through growing pains. The key is learning from those mistakes. |
![]() | I just bought my airplane ticket to New Orleans for Super Bowl weekend. I fully expect the Patriots to be there. | I hope this isn't a nonrefundable ticket. The Patriots look Super in November. But it's all about who stays healthy and gets hot in January. It's too early to crown anyone. |
![]() | Fire Rex Ryan! Fire Mike Tannenbaum! Fire Fireman Ed! FIRE EVERYBODY! | Sure, the Jets were an on-field circus in their 30-point loss to the Patriots on Thanksgiving. But there are still five games left for Rex Ryan & Co. to prove they deserve one more year. Let's see what happens. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | The Broncos' flat performance against the Chiefs is a sign that this team is ready to take a dip. | Nope, it's the NFL. Every week is different, and it is difficult for any team to play at a dominant level on a weekly basis. This isn't college football. You aren't dinged for unimpressive wins. |
![]() | There is no such thing as the Arrowhead Stadium home-field advantage anymore. The Chiefs are 0-6 at home for the first time since 1976. | Yes, but don't blame it on Arrowhead Stadium. It's not the stadium's fault, and it's not the fan base's fault. It's this team's fault. Give the stadium and the fans a good product, and Arrowhead will again be a house of horrors for visiting teams. |
![]() | It's time to think about using Terrelle Pryor in Oakland. The season is lost. Let's see what the kid can do. | It's difficult to argue. But the Raiders' 3-8 record is not Carson Palmer's fault. He's not the problem. |
![]() | The Chargers' defensive collapse on the Ravens' fourth-and-29 conversion Sunday was the biggest gaffe in the NFL this season. | It's hard to argue against that. All anyone wants to talk about is how the Chargers allowed a first down in that circumstance. That play will never be forgotten. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens came back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Ray Rice converted on fourth-and-29. This is shaping up to be a special season. | The win in San Diego could be the Ravens' signature victory. Everything is falling into place for the Ravens, from the AFC North title to the second seed in the AFC. The challenge is to keep up that momentum heading into the postseason. |
![]() | The Bengals are playing like the best team in the division right now. They're not just beating teams. They're beating them up. Who Dey! | What's really impressive about the Bengals' three-game win streak is the margin of victory. They're beating teams by an average of 21 points. Cincinnati has the chance to deliver another rout at reeling San Diego. |
![]() | The Browns are starting to turn things around. The win over the Steelers was huge for the confidence of this young team. This is a great sign for the 2013 season. | Cleveland is 3-3 after starting a disastrous 0-5. It won't be enough to save Pat Shurmur's job, but the Browns definitely are building momentum that can carry over into next season. |
![]() | The Steelers are falling apart. They turned the ball over eight times to the Browns. How can you expect Pittsburgh to hold on to the final playoff spot in the AFC when it can't hold on to the ball? | The loss at Cleveland doesn't leave the Steelers much room for error in December. They probably have to win four of their next five games to secure a playoff spot. But this team will get a boost when Ben Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu return. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | This team is pretty bad for a 10-1 team. The defense has been getting away with murder. We're not worried about Tennessee, but that trip to New England for "Monday Night Football" is going to be ugly. | Houston's ability to find ways to win even with one side of the ball struggling has been remarkable. The defense has hit a lull, but it's going to bounce back. |
![]() | Never mind these people talking about how we've not beaten anyone and can't do damage in the playoffs. Our team has tremendous purpose and will continue to surprise. | There is nothing wrong with beating lesser teams when they are on your schedule. If the Colts keep going like that, it'll be a season to be proud of. |
![]() | In Chad Henne we trust. If they had turned to this guy earlier, maybe we would be in better shape. It sure was fun to watch the Jags win. | It's completely understandable why the team hung with Blaine Gabbert for as long as it did. And Henne's first relief appearance in Oakland gave us no hint he would be such an upgrade. |
![]() | Hooray, they fired Chris Palmer. Couldn't they have done away with Jerry Gray, too? Losing at Jacksonville makes me question how much longer I can root for this team. | It's a reasonable move, and Dowell Loggains has a chance to be a good coordinator. But expecting further change in season is silly. |

WEEK 11
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | We're going to win this division. No, seriously. After we beat the Redskins on Thursday and the Giants lose to the Packers on Sunday, we'll be tied for first and have the much easier schedule. You heard it here first. | Dallas needed overtime to beat the Browns. The offensive line is getting more banged up by the week. The Cowboys could contend if the Giants don't run away, but nothing's going to come easy. |
![]() | Enough with that "November swoon" stuff. We're back from the bye and ready to take care of business. We know we're the best team in the division, and history says we'll pull it out in the end. | Very recent history does, indeed, say that. But the schedule looks daunting, and it's not as though the Tom Coughlin Giants have ALWAYS finished strong. They really could use a win Sunday night to ease minds. |
![]() | Why do I even bother? Why was I cursed to be a Philadelphia sports fan? Just when things seem as though they can't get worse, they do. Maybe I should pick another team to root for. | A 25-point loss to the Redskins has to be rock bottom, right? The Eagles aren't doing anything well right now, but it's hard to believe they won't win another game all year. At some point, they'll have to look like a real NFL team again. Right? Right??? |
![]() | The Cowboys are going down on Thanksgiving, and we're the team that's going to be right behind the Giants in the standings. All things are possible with RG3. | Robert Griffin III is certainly the kind of guy who makes football fans dream big dreams. But Dallas is a much tougher defensive team than the team the Redskins beat Sunday, and Washington's defense doesn't play that well every week. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Ken Whisenhunt has officially lost it. He's up 13-3 on the road against the Falcons and he benches his starting quarterback for Ryan Freaking Lindley? Time to start updating that resume, coach. | There's some merit in such a reaction. Problem is, John Skelton was Whisenhunt's starting quarterback, and Whisenhunt had spent two weeks talking about how he was going to hold everyone accountable. Everyone included Skelton. And let's face it, Lindley might not have been worse. |
![]() | Colin Kaepernick is the next Steve Young! Bench Alex Smith. Reserve those Super Bowl tickets. This revitalized 49ers offense cannot be stopped. Just ask the Bears. | Smith's tenure as the starter could very well continue. Perhaps the team can use his concussion to give Kaepernick another week. Either way, I would expect the 49ers to feature their ground game in a big way at New Orleans. |
![]() | How bad did the Dolphins and Bears look? Seattle should defeat both of them on the road the next two weeks. The only other road game on the schedule is against the Bills in Toronto. This team can run the table. | The 49ers have only two defeats through 10 games. Even if the Seahawks did run the table, there's no guarantee it would be enough to win the division. Remember, too, that Seattle is 1-4 on the road this season. |
![]() | Same old Rams. Just when you think they've turned a corner, they re-enact 2009. Sam Bradford played like a bust. The defense couldn't stop Mark Sanchez. This team might not win another game all season if it can't beat the Jets at home. | The NFL is often a week-to-week proposition. This is the NFL's youngest team. There will be peaks and valleys. The Rams have to like their chances at Arizona. A victory there would keep St. Louis unbeaten in NFC West play. That's not so bad. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | The Bears are 0-2 since hitting the meat of their schedule. | It's a legitimate concern. The only winning team the Bears have defeated this season is the Indianapolis Colts, and that victory came in Week 1. The Bears are no longer the unquestioned NFC North leaders and have a short holiday week to prepare for the 6-4 Minnesota Vikings. |
![]() | The Lions are likely to miss the playoffs after going 10-6 and making them last year. Someone needs to get fired. | Perhaps it is time for some kind of change, but the target is less clear. Fans' favorite target is offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, but Linehan has had a dramatic impact on Matthew Stafford's development. Replacing Linehan could set back Stafford. |
![]() | It's time to cut Mason Crosby. | Yes, Crosby has missed seven of his past 13 attempts and has put the team in a really tough spot. But Crosby has pulled himself out of slumps before, and there are no easy answers if you want to replace your kicker in late November. |
![]() | After watching the Bears get trounced Monday night by a team Minnesota has defeated, the Vikings feel more confident than ever that they are a playoff team. | The Vikings have two games left against the Bears, including Sunday at Soldier Field. The Bears will be on a short holiday week. The Vikings are coming off their bye. Hmmm. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yaskinskas | ||
![]() | The ugly victory against Arizona showed the Falcons have way more problems than a 9-1 team should, and those problems will cost them in the postseason. | Maybe so, but I think what happened against Arizona was due in part to the hangover from a loss to New Orleans that drained the Falcons emotionally and physically. With a division game against the second-place Buccaneers coming up, followed by a rematch with the Saints, we're about to find out if the Falcons are Super Bowl contenders or pretenders. |
![]() | The Panthers hit rock bottom by squandering an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter and losing to Tampa Bay in overtime. | No, this team can go even lower. The Panthers have a Monday night game at Philadelphia ahead. If they get embarrassed on national television by a team that might have even more problems, then the Panthers officially will hit rock bottom. |
![]() | The New Orleans defense suddenly is showing improvement. That will continue and the Saints will make the playoffs. | No doubt the defense did some good things Sunday, but let's remember that the Raiders were the opponent. We're about to find out about this defense and New Orleans' playoff chances. The Saints are getting ready to face the 49ers, Falcons and Giants, and that stretch will determine a lot. |
![]() | The red-hot Buccaneers will make the playoffs. | It's certainly a possibility, but we don't really know how good this team is, mainly because the Bucs have faced a soft schedule so far. We'll start to find out if they're for real Sunday when they host the division-leading Atlanta Falcons. |
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 11
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | Did you see how we beat the Dolphins? It's time to run the table and make the playoffs, baby! | The Bills have an easy schedule, but this team isn't consistent enough to win out. Buffalo has a big game at Indianapolis next week that is a must-win. |
![]() | I can't believe quarterback Ryan Tannehill laid two eggs in a row. I want Chad Henne back! That guy was a stud on Sunday. | Calm down, Dolphins fans. Tannehill is a rookie who must go through some growing pains. He's ahead of schedule by simply playing this year, and he'll only get better. |
![]() | The Patriots' defense made Andrew Luck look like Trent Edwards. New England's defense won't be an issue the rest of the year. | This was a promising performance, but I'm not sure New England's defense is out of the woods just yet. But the offense is so good, it may not matter. |
![]() | We are coming for the Patriots on Thanksgiving! We almost had them at their place, but we let them off the hook. Can't wait! | Yes, I think the Jets have a chance at the upset. Rivalry games often can go either way regardless of record. The Jets also have the benefit of catching the Patriots on a short week. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | The Broncos' offense is in serious trouble with starting running back Willis McGahee out for at least six weeks. | This offense revolves around Peyton Manning. McGahee will be missed, but Manning will find a way to make it work. |
![]() | The outrage displayed by Chiefs fans will force Kansas City ownership into making a change at both general manager and coach. | Unless the 1-9 Chiefs somehow get hot at the end of the season, I do think the Hunt family will feel no choice but to clean house. The fan base would completely revolt if a change isn't made. |
![]() | Oakland owner Mark Davis is seriously considering making changes because he expressed disappointment with his team's brass following Sunday's game. | No, we're not at that point, but Davis' words are worth paying attention to. It shows his frustration, and frustrated owners are always worth watching. |
![]() | The Chargers' problems on offense are not all the fault of quarterback Philip Rivers. He just isn't getting much help. | That is very much true. Yes, Rivers is causing his own problems with his chronic turnover issues, but look at this group as a whole. It is not helping its quarterback at all. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and beat up Byron Leftwich. Baltimore now owns the AFC North. The Ravens now need to worry about getting a top-two seed in the AFC. | With a two-game lead over Pittsburgh and given the current quarterback situation with the Steelers, it certainly looks like this is the Ravens' division to lose. But the Ravens could fall on Sunday at San Diego, where they've had problems. If the Steelers win at Cleveland, it's back to a one-game margin heading into another Ravens-Steelers grudge match. |
![]() | The Bengals took care of business at Kansas City and will have no problems with Carson Palmer coming to town. Cincinnati is one game back of the banged-up Steelers for the final playoff spot. Watch out Pittsburgh, here come the Bengals! | The Bengals have a favorable schedule ahead: Oakland, San Diego, Dallas and Philadelphia. But they still need to win at Pittsburgh in late December. If the Bengals finished tied with the Steelers at the end of the season, the Steelers would have the tiebreaker edge because of the season sweep. |
![]() | The Browns can't finish games. They were up 14-0 to the Giants earlier this year and lost. They were leading the Cowboys 13-0 at halftime on Sunday and lost. Will this agony ever end? | The close losses are heartbreaking, but there is reason for hope. Being competitive shows that there is talent on this team. The next step is finding a way to get these young players over the hump late in games. |
![]() | It looks like Charlie Batch is now going to start with Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich being hurt. Will he be able to hold up at 37? Can he beat the Browns in Cleveland? This is starting to look bad for the Steelers. | Batch is certainly the last resort in terms of quarterbacks on the current roster, but he has won before. He's 5-2 as a fill-in starter for Pittsburgh and has shown the ability to be a game manager (look at the game against the Rams last season). But it will be time to worry if the Steelers lose at Cleveland. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | Our defense is horrible! What happened? We made the Jaguars look like a dangerous offense. Johnathan Joseph is hurt. Megatron will detroy us. | Even the best teams have a bad day. And when you win on your bad day, that's a pretty good development. The Texans are probably going to lose more than one game, and it won't be catastrophic. |
![]() | So much for those playoff hopes. That team that took the field in New England was horrible. They didn't deserve to be on the same field with the Patriots. | Being a playoff team and being an elite team in the AFC are two very different things. The Colts can easily be the first without being the second. |
![]() | Even on our best day we lose and give up massive quarterback and receiver performances. Blaine Gabbert is done here. Chad Henne and Justin Blackmon can beat the Titans, can't they? | It's been a long time since the Jaguars felt good about themselves. And even after blowing that game in Houston, there is reason to feel more upbeat than they have in a long time. |
![]() | Losing to Jacksonville on Sunday might be a new low for this team. Who's going to cover Justin Blackmon? | Maybe they found their footing with the big win in Miami and with self-scouting over the bye week. I don't see five or six wins the rest of the way, but Tennessee can play better down the stretch. |

Twitter Double Coverage: Colts vs. Patriots
US PresswireIs the rivalry between the Andrew Luck-led Colts and the Tom Brady-led Patriots as good as it used to be?For a long time, Colts vs. Patriots has meant Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady.
Sunday's matchup at Gillette Stadium is the first of the post-Manning era for the Colts. That doesn't mean it loses its intrigue. Rallying behind ill coach Chuck Pagano and let by rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, the Colts are 6-3 and in serious playoff contention just a year removed from 2-14. Teams that have a new GM, a new coach (and an interim coach filling in for him) and a new quarterback are not supposed to turn things around that quickly.
Can they pull a road upset against the defending AFC Champions? Bruce Arians has drawn up plenty of game plans against Bill Belichick, but it's the Patriots who could find more to exploit in this matchup.
