Aaron Kampman's whereabouts were the most misreportred thing on the first day of free agency.
So when Alfie Crow wrote Saturday morning that Kampman was in Jacksonville I was skeptical and put out calls, e-mails and texts trying to confirm.
I even spoke to Kampman’s mother, who’s said she's sworn to secrecy regarding his whereabouts. But Michael C. Wright got it confirmed. (So kudos to Crow.)
This is a big development for a team in dire need of pass-rush help that isn’t generally going to be a big player in high-priced free agency.
Kampman’s price will be down a bit after a tough year as a piece in Green Bay’s new 3-4 and a season-ending left knee injury.
But he’s a bit younger than Kyle Vanden Bosch, another high-motor 4-3 end who just got four years and $26 million from the Detroit Lions, with $10 million in the first year.
I think a healthy Kampman could be a transformative guy for Jacksonville. I’m impressed the Jaguars got him there. But that’s only step one.
I’ll be more impressed if they don’t let him go before he’s got a contract worked out.
