No room for sentiment with Colts on Harrison
And there was little room for sentimentality with the Colts as far as Marvin Harrison's situation.
Agent Tom Condon told the AP that Indianapolis will make Harrison's release official Tuesday or Wednesday and Bill Polian has a home run quote on it.
"There was no hardball with this, just heartache," Polian told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
I expect we'll discuss Harrison's legacy later in the week.
The AP report says the move will rankle Colts fans, but I am not sure that's the case with the majority. He was not the same guy last season, and while the faithful are appreciative of his career, they also want to maximize the team's chances to win another Super Bowl during the remainder of Peyton Manning's prime and trust that's Polian's singular focus.
Most who follow the team on a daily basis had the same sense as Sports Illustrated's Peter King, who wrote Monday morning that "Polian does not give scholarships for longer than one year. And Harrison was on scholarship last year."
Harrison would rank highly on a list of the least public stars in the NFL, so I don't expect we're going to hear anything from him about how this goes down or what he's hoping for going forward.
