Assessing the Texans’ backup QB situation if Matt Schaub is injured and misses time.
With a regular-season passer rating of 80.7 over six games, T.J. Yates showed in 2011 that he can be a capable NFL starter. That proof came during a rookie season following the NFL lockout -- which meant he didn’t have the benefit of any organized team activities or offseason schooling. While Yates led the Texans to a first-round playoff victory over Cincinnati, he looked every bit the overmatched rookie in the game that ended Houston’s season in Baltimore. He’ll be Schaub’s backup this season and should be better equipped than he was a year ago to step in as needed. -- though the idea is a relief effort and a start or two, not the sort of long stretch the Texans had to ask of him a year ago.
Confidence rating (out of 100) if Schaub is out for extended period: 73.
