The Jaguars are on the right side of the contract dispute with Maurice Jones-Drew. He took a front-loaded deal two years ago, he should have known he could have wound up feeling underpaid in the back end.

The lone “compromise” where the Jaguars wouldn’t actually budge from their stance that Jones-Drew won’t get an extension could be for the team to pay him more of the $9.4 million he is due over the next two years sooner.

The Jaguars and Titans are also on the right side of the negotiations that continue to keep first-round receivers Justin Blackmon and Kendall Wright out of camp. They are the only picks remaining who are unsigned.

We don’t know the specifics of what sort of assurances the Jaguars are looking for in a Blackmon contract. But after his DUI in Oklahoma after the Jaguars traded up to draft him fifth, it’s reasonable they’d want protections in the contract that would hardly be standard.

If we’re making a big investment in you, simply give us insurance for if you mess up again. If you plan on not messing up again, then it shouldn’t be such a hard line you have to hold.

With the Titans, agent Jeff Nalley is simply being stubborn regarding a deal for Wright. Nalley apparently believes that because last year’s 20th pick, Tampa Bay defensive end Adrian Clayborn, got a fully guaranteed fourth season, that Wright should too.

Of course that logic requires him to ignore the fact that Clayborn’s deal was a fluke. John Glennon of The Tennessean has reported that no other player drafted after No. 16 last year or this year has received a fully guaranteed fourth year.

So why should Wright?

The Titans could move to a partial guarantee. They should move no further. And Wright should accept the realities of the situation and get to work.
