HOUSTON -- In the AFC South chat we just finished, I was asked which non-quarterbacks rank as the most indispensible players to their teams.
For the Texans offense, I picked left tackle Duane Brown.
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that Brown, who was heading into the last year of his rookie contract, has agreed on a new contract with the team.
Gary Kubiak’s Texans are keyed around their run game, and their run game is built with a zone-blocking scheme at which Brown is excellent.
He’s grown into a top tier tackle in their system, and it’s a relief for them to know they won’t be searching for his replacement any time soon.
The Texans won’t negotiate contracts during the season. But with Brown done, they should get greedy and work hard to also lock up outside linebacker Connor Barwin. His contract is to expire after this season.
If the team got that deal done, too, then next offseason would be all about quarterback Matt Schaub, and the team could pretty easily move into 2013 and beyond with the current core intact.
An aside on the offensive line: They were not happy with how they practiced Thursday morning. Per Mark Berman of KRIV in Houston, the veterans expressed the displeasure in a meeting on the field before the hit the showers.
