Gray said players shouldn’t worry about the potential to be fined for a big hit and that if teams threw over the middle they better be ready to call for the cart that carries off injured players.
"This is football, but my choice of words under the circumstances was probably bad,'' Gray told Werder. "If I could take that part of it back, I would. I don't want guys thinking about injuring people and, when you say 'Gator Truck' that's probably what comes up. I just want our guys to be tougher.''
That’s a good and appropriate reaction to me, and puts the issue to rest. Werder reports the league is looking into the comments, but I suspect they’ll conclude the same.
If the Titans draw a personal foul penalty in the middle of the field or deliver a hit that leaves a player needing to be carted off, however, it will resurface in a big way.
