Mathis is expected to be out two to three weeks with a sprained left knee, Mike Chappell and Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star are reporting.
Freeney suffered a high-ankle sprain early in the team’s season opener in Chicago and missed the next three games. He and Mathis helped bolster a defensive effort that was quite good in the second half of the upset of the Packers.
But Mathis twisted his left knee in the fourth quarter and is now on the shelf while he rehabilitates.
He’s recorded a sack in seven consecutive games dating back to last season.
Freeney will surely draw extra attention now, with the Jets not having to be nearly as concerned about the other outside backer.
