Chuck Pagano is finished with chemotherapy, and his doctors told the Indianapolis Star that the coach’s return to work depends on how he bounced back from the treatment.
Dr. Larry Cripe of IU Health Simon Cancer Center spoke with Mike Chappell about the chance for Pagano to be back on the sideline for the Colts' regular-season finale on Dec. 30, which has long been a goal.
"Medically, I think it's very possible and I think the coach will make the decision about how he's feeling and whether he's up to the task," Cripe said. "Then, the organization will make a decision.
"It's feasible. It's possible. Is it definite? No. I definitely think that's where we're heading and we have our fingers crossed that things go well and he's able to do it."
Pagano’s been on leave since Sept. 26, when it was discovered he had leukemia.
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has run the team in Pagano’s absence, though he’s in regular contact with his boss.
Pagano’s been in attendance at two games at Lucas Oil Stadium and Arians has talked about the goal of having him back to work for the Dec. 30 game against the Texans and for the playoffs.
The Colts haven’t secured a spot in the postseason field, but are in good shape with four games left.
