HOUSTON -- Texans quarterback Matt Schaub returned to practice Wednesday morning after missing two days because of a death in his family.

After practice, Schaub shared that it was his maternal grandfather, Bob Rutledge, whose funeral he attended -- a man with whom he was close growing up.

"My grandfather, he was one of my biggest fans," Schaub said. "He was always there, always supportive. First one I would talk to when I got home from games growing up. In high school, in college, would always be there to support me. He was a special man."

Schaub's mother was an only child, so he spent a lot of time with his maternal grandparents growing up.

"It was his time and he lived 90 great years," Schaub said. "... It was huge for me to go up there and spend some time with them (this week). It was big for me and my wife. We went back in early June, it was his 90th birthday. So to be able to spend that time was huge for us."
