What I think they are thinking in the headquarters of the four AFC South teams Monday…
Houston Texans
Not good enough. Thirteen penalties for 103 yards? That’s gift giving to a team that needs no help. Fourteen catches for Dallas Clark, many with our stud rookie linebacker as the key guy in coverage? Ridiculous. Ryan Moats picking up where Steve Slaton left off with the fumbling? Unacceptable. A missed field goal well in range of Kris Brown that could have forced OT? Not good enough. That’s a lot for us to mull during our bye. There is a national buzz that we’re still missing something and it’s hard to argue the point. What is it and how do we find it for Monday night at home against the Titans and a rematch with the Colts?
Indianapolis Colts
It’s almost a good thing that the last two of our eight wins have been hard fought. Because a) that’s good for forging a playoff ready team, and b) it will drive us to continue to work at some of the things we still need to work at, first and foremost the run game. Bill Belichick versus Peyton Manning always makes for an interesting game. Jim Caldwell’s done as good a coaching job as anyone in the league to this point. We have faith that he can match up well against Belichick, but it’s his, and our, biggest challenge yet.
Jacksonville Jaguars
We’ve done pretty well beating bad teams -- Seattle was an obvious exception. But it’s a good sign. So is the return to a 4-3, and we’re all hoping it’s permanent. Fact is, we don’t have the personnel to fully stock either front with effective people and depth, but there is something to be said for carrying a long-term mentality and scheme and with Jack Del Rio leading us, the 3-4 experiment always felt like an awkward force. We won’t read too much into a pass rush revival and Mike Sims-Walker being wide open since it was the Chiefs. And killer instinct is still not our thing, we like to makes people sweat out our wins.
Tennessee Titans
Whatever happens from here, we’re going to look back at the wins over Jacksonville and at San Francisco and wonder why we couldn’t muster that kind of effort and production during our 0-6 start. What did someone give Justin Gage some sort of smelling salts? Did someone light Cortland Finnegan’s hair on fire? Far-fetched or not, while Jeff Fisher urges us to talk about the next one, you’re going to hear us mention the possibility of winning out. And oh, yeah: Why didn’t we sign Rod Hood weeks earlier? He was out there since Sept. 5.
