NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The questions about Chris Johnson's future won't dissipate until we know he's cut by the Titans or they say they're keeping him.
So when coach Ken Whisenhunt visited The Midday 180 in Nashville Tuesday afternoon, I asked him if he just wanted to get it out of the way and spill.
“You know, that's a valid thing,” he said, more with regard to the lingering questions than his willingness to put them to bed. “I mean this is a high-profile player that's had a lot of success in this league. And I think the answer to that question is, I think because of that, we're going to go through the process and do it the right way. It's not just necessarily with Chris Johnson, it's with all of the players on our team. You have to do that. Once again, where we are starting out, we want to start fast, we want to be a good team and you've got to make those decisions.
“So it's not something you can do, I think, after just watching some games and making a decision based off that. I think an important thing is sitting down with Sylvester Croom and talking about the dynamic in the running back room and how those guys work and talking to some of the defensive coaches and their perspective of some of the players. And I'm talking about some of the coaches that were here. That's one of the pieces of the puzzle that's important too, is having some coaches on the staff that were here before. Because, you've heard me say this, chemistry is an important piece of it, and it is.
“You've got to get a sense for some of the issues that the team sees. Much like Delanie Walker. He came out and said last week about some issues with the team. That's all a big part of the evaluation process as you would say, and that's what we're working on.”
In addition to Croom, the running back coach, Whisenhunt can rely on five other returning coaches for info on issues the team may have had in the past: Receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, special teams coach Nate Kaczor and his assistant Steve Hoffman, strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson and assistant secondary coach Steve Brown.
Whisenhunt also discussed putting together a jigsaw puzzle of a staff, having assistants to assistants at some positions, starting his film review by looking at the lines and the pre-combine scouting staff meetings. Check that out here.
