Colts suited for 'finish' theme

After a challenging three game-stretch at home, the Colts remain undefeated. They hardly played their best ball in an 18-14 win over San Francisco, a 20-17 win over Houston or a 35-34 win over New England.

But in many ways, those gritty wins were more impressive than 31-10 at Arizona or 42-6 at St. Louis.

What did the Colts learn about themselves during that homestand?

“You know what? There is a lot of moxie on this team,” guard Ryan Lilja said. “It's just the right group of guys. No panic in this room. No panic on the sidelines. No quit attitude.

"Finish. Coach talks about it all the time. Finish. Finish everything. Finish blocks. Finish routes. Finish plays. Finish tackling. Finish the game. And golly, we’ve been finishing the games these last three we’ve had. I’m just proud of it.”

The Colts have gotten some help. They won a big challenge against the Texans and Houston missed a last-second field goal that would have forced overtime. Bill Belichick’s failed decision to go for it on fourth down positioned the Colts for their winning points against the Patriots.

“We’ve had some help,” Lilja said. “We’ve been fortunate to have the ball bounce our way I guess.”

The Colts' next four games look pretty challenging. They head to Baltimore Sunday, face Houston in a rematch at Reliant Stadium, then host the Titans and Broncos.

Nobody's talking about an undefeated season. My sense is they think it's possible, but it's too early to consider and they are too smart to make it, rather than positioning themselves to play well in the postseason, their focus.

“We find ways to win,” linebacker Gary Brackett said. “We’re just going out there fighting.”
