Mike G in Aventura, Fla., writes: If and when Anthony Gonzalez gets back into game shape for the Colts, do you think it's wise to put him in the starting line-up and possibly disrupt the budding chemistry between Peyton and his young receivers (Pierre Garcon/Austin Collie)? Being a fan, I don't really even want him to come back this season with the way things are going.
Paul Kuharsky: You should want Gonzalez back. Garcon has had some bad games. Trust in the staff to be able to figure out how to ease Gonzalez back in and make things work. But it’s always best if you have a maximum number of healthy, quality people available.
Ray Runyon in Clarksville, Tenn., writes: What are the odds of the Titans running the table? At this point, does it appear that Vince Young will be the quarterback for the foreseeable future? It did not appear, from VY's body language, last year and this year, that he was maturing. Do you really think that he has made a miraculous jump or is it just that having VY and CJ in the backfield is a nightmare for opposing defenses? Also, the offense seems to be trying harder for VY than they did for Collins. Is this a legitimate observation or is there something to this? I know Collins has had "problems" in the past. Also, the same seems to be true of Collins' body language on the sideline. I sure do enjoy hearing you on the Zone.
Paul Kuharsky: Thanks for reading and listening, Ray.
It’s a 10-game audition and the start’s been great for Vince Young, but it’s too early to say they’ve decided what to do going forward. I think they tried hard for Kerry Collins, too. There were a lot of factors that contributed to the terrible start.
That Justin Gage was dropping balls for Collins and literally broke his back to make a catch for Young isn’t about Collins and Young, it’s about Gage.
I can’t see the Titans winning 10 in a row. Out of Arizona, Indy, Miami and San Diego I think they lose at least one, maybe more.
Jeff in Grand Blanc, Mich., writes: Your new assignment is to upgrade the Colts running game. Where do you start?
Paul Kuharsky: I think with the tackles. They do good work keeping Peyton Manning clean, and Manning does great work getting rid of the ball to prevent much trouble for himself in the backfield.
The way they work I don’t think they are going to get giants and be a power running team. But the feeling around the league seems to be they can do a lot better in their system, personnel-wise. I would think offensive line will be a key in the upcoming draft.
Howard Mudd has said this will be his last year. Pete Metzelaars is in line to take over as the top offensive line coach. Perhaps he can bring a bit of change to the run game mentality the way Larry Coyer has tweaked the defense as the new coordinator.
