Pondering Kubiak's future

If you are looking for a call for Gary Kubiak’s head, you’ve come to the wrong place.

I don’t want to be a blog that calls for change at the top, and I admit I am not sure if when you’re this close to good if it’s better to stick it out or look to make a big change.

But I do agree, strongly, with one opinion I read this week, this one from Jerome Solomon.

"If Bob McNair is considering firing Gary Kubiak, he needs to make the call now."

"Not the announcement, the decision. He needs to do it now, before the Texans go on a run to respectability. Before a strong finish tricks him into thinking Kubiak is on the right track."

McNair’s come out in support of Kubiak since that was written, but that support is intended for right now, not after this is all over.

Maybe the Texans go on a huge run here after a very disappointing three-game stretch, wind up 10-6 and in the playoffs and any talk about Kubiak’s job status is completely moot.

But if it doesn’t go that way, McNair would be well-advised to have a letter in his desk, addressed to himself and dated this week, reminding him how he feels about things right now, in the wake of the games that probably mattered most.

If what he puts inside that envelope says make a change, then McNair shouldn’t be swayed by a 4-1 or 3-2 feel-good finish that doesn’t produce a playoff result.
