NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Anticipate a sentimental final month to the season for Keith Bulluck, the Titans' linebacking stalwart who could be playing his final four games for the team.
He’s heading for unrestricted free agency in what could be a cap-free year. It’s uncharted territory, and he’s said from the start of the season he didn’t expect to land a new deal in Tennessee, where he was a first-round pick in 2000.
I had a chance to chat solo with him about what’s ahead before he took on several of the same topics with a large group.
Here’s that conversation:
Will there be any sentimentality to this, with it possibly being your last month here?
Keith Bulluck: Yeah, pretty much after the game with the Colts and our playoff chances looking slim, it is a reality. I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t think about it. It is a reality. And with that being the reality I plan on having a lot of fun these last four weeks.
You said before the season you didn’t anticipate getting a deal to be back. Still feel the same?
KB: Yeah, I feel that. Unfortunately, I do. There might be some indications that I might be back, but I don’t know. I don’t lean one way or the other.
What sort of indications? Is there anything going on?
KB: Nah, not at all. But I’m a baller. I still perform at the same level. That’s my indication, that I’ve been a professional my whole time here and blah, blah, blah, everything that comes with it. Anything that’s been asked of me I feel I’ve done everything expected of me.
If there is no cap, they get an extra tag. You think there is a scenario where they franchise you?
KB: I would hope not. I would hope they wouldn’t. I would rather know that I have more than just one year locked in. I think that would be pretty selfish on their part if that’s what they chose to do. But with four games left, I’m not really thinking in depth on it at all.
That would be a fair number for one year, yeah? The average of the top five highest paid linebackers?
KB: It has nothing to do with the number. That franchise number is a very nice number; we’re not arguing about that. I would have to put more thought into how I really feel about it. I don’t want to put anything out there that I haven’t really sat down and thought about in depth.
How many years do you think you have left?
KB: I don’t really want to talk about this. More than one, definitely. But right now, I’m just looking to finish these four. It’s going to be a fun, exciting time for me. In my 10-year career I’ve never been in a situation like this. I’ve always know that I was going to be a Tennessee Titan. So I think after the Seattle game it’ll be pretty interesting. I think I’ll have fun with it and we’ll see what happens.
Will you be a little slower to leave the field after that final home game against San Diego Christmas night in case that’s the last one?
KB: I have no clue. I am not a planner. I’m a go with the flow type guy.
