Jags offense needs more explosion
By Paul Kuharsky
The Jaguars, like everyone else, crave big plays. They hope it’s an area where playmakers will be able to do more.
Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was asked this week about the concept that teams that do well in turnover differential and explosive plays win more.
“Those are the two No. 1 things in winning,” he said. “Brian Billick beats the drum for that, but all the NFL statistics guys will tell you that. Now on our side of the ball, obviously our defense is trying to get takeaways, so we don’t control that on our side. We just focus on not giving it away and creating explosive plays. Those are No. 1 and No. 2.
“We did a good job in the preseason, we didn’t give it away. Our goal is eight explosive plays a game. In four preseason games we had 30 explosive plays, so we were two under our goal and those eight a game are based on averaging 65 plays a game. We certainly didn’t average 65 plays a game.”
The Jaguars need to get those 65 plays Sunday against Denver. Koetter’s definition of explosive plays: Runs over 12 yards and passes over 16.
