Trent Edwards expecting full game plan

By Paul Kuharsky

David Garrard initially hurt the middle finger on his throwing hand against the Colts on Dec. 19 but it wasn’t until the overtime loss to Washington on Sunday when it really became an issue, he told Jacksonville reporters on Wednesday.

Edwards
“Before the Redskins game, it just felt like two jammed fingers,” he said. “I was throwing the ball fine at practice. I had to have hit it at some point in the game or fall to the ground on it to make it worse but it could have been just the constant throwing in the game, I’m not sure.”

It’s a torn ligament that won’t allow him to use the finger normally and requires surgery that will include the insertion of a pin. He doesn’t remember banging it against the Redskins, but does remember scratching some yellow paint off the knuckle.

“I can’t do anything with it,” he said when asked about his ability to grip the ball. “The finger won’t bend around like a normal finger, it just kind of bends up. It’s weird. You can definitely tell something needs to be done with it. I’ve been grossing the guys out around here with it, too.”

Trent Edwards takes over. Jacksonville could also be without Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) for a second week in a row. He didn't practice Wednesday. The Jaguars could still win the AFC South with a win in Houston and an Indianapolis loss to Tennessee.

“I’m going to study my butt off all week,” Edwards said. “I’m going to get as prepared as I possibly can and make sure I’m ready to go. I know that everyone else in this locker room is going to do that, too...”

“I think we’ll start with a normal game plan and kind of go from there. If there are things that I’m not throwing well or I’m not comfortable with, then we’ll probably move those things down the priority list a little bit. You would have to ask [offensive coordinator] Dirk [Koetter] that, though. I feel like this is a similar game plan to what we’ve run in weeks past. I don’t know if there is really anything he’s holding out because he knows I’m playing this week.”
