Jags' Aaron Ross savors wife's gold medal
By Paul Kuharsky
Jaguars cornerback Aaron Ross got a couple days off to travel to London to watch his wife compete in the Olympics.
Sanya Richards-Ross celebrates winning gold in the women's 400-meter final with her husband, left, the Jaguars' Aaron Ross.
Per AP’s Mark Long, who covers the Jaguars and is in London covering the Olympics, after Sanya Richards-Ross won the gold medal in the woman’s 400 meters, Ross told her: "You finally did it, you finally did it, babe. Enjoy the moment."
"She worked so hard,” Ross said. “All the emotions going through her mind, my mind, her family's mind, everybody that's seen the struggles. It just a great moment right now."
Ross was part of two Super Bowl winning teams with the New York Giants. Before he joined the Jaguars as a free agent, he asked about the possibility of stepping out of camp to be part of his wife’s moment. General manager Gene Smith and coach Mike Mularkey both signed on.
It’s the biggest outward showing of the importance of family the Jaguars want to foster with Mularkey at the helm.
The coach said last week if Richards-Ross won, she’d have to bring her medal to EverBank Field so he and the team could see it. She has two gold medals from previous relays, with the potential for more in London.
Ross returns to Jacksonville on Monday and will rejoin the team Tuesday. He is competing with Rashean Mathis for a starting cornerback spot. The player who doesn’t win will work as the nickel cornerback.
