Reading Texans coverage, with a new voice

By Tania Ganguli

Sunday's Texans news was dominated by two things: Arian Foster and Dustin Keller.

One is not a Texans player, but the impact of a completely legal but incredibly unfortunate hit by a Texans player ended his season.

The other is still working through a back injury he suffered during training camp.

Foster's situation still has a lot of unanswered questions, which makes it unwise to panic about just yet. One really important distinction seems to be getting lost here. On Sunday I asked coach Gary Kubiak specifically what caused the leg pain he mentioned for Foster. Kubiak said, as he understood it, the leg pain was related to the injections he received. That's different from saying the pain is just traveling.

Paul Kuharsky has officially passed the Reading the Coverage baton to me for Texans links starting today, so let's get to it.

1. 2013 Injury Outlook: Running backs, Stephania Bell, ESPN.com:
If you have started to panic about Foster, please read this first. Bell gives a really thorough examination from a medical perspective on what is happening with Foster, why it's important to be patient with this kind of injury and what else could go wrong if you're not. She explains why pushing Foster could lead to other injuries. She also gives plenty of reasons not to panic yet. If you read this and still want to panic, then, well, at least it's an informed panic.

2. Window closing for Foster to get preseason game reps, Randy Harvey, Houston Chronicle:
And if you're really inclined to panic, here's Randy Harvey  with some reasons to do so. Harvey argues that it's important for Foster to get preseason reps in order to succeed during the regular season.

3. Texans get 'good news' about Reed, Dave Zangaro, CSNHouston.com:
Kubiak said the Texans think Reed is "ahead."

4. Case Keenum gets help from an important friend, Chris Baldwin, Houston Culture Map:
A look at the quarterback fighting for his place on the team and his relationship with receiver Lestar Jean, who is also fighting for his place on the team.

5. Worst-case scenario: Miami Dolphins TE Dustin Keller out for the season, Adam Beasley, Miami Herald:
Beasley uses the word 'catastrophic' to describe Keller's knee injury, caused by a hit from Texans safety D.J. Swearinger. An appropriate time for such a strong word.
