Rogers hoping to help Colts at receiver
By Mike Wells
INDIANAPOLIS -- Receiver Da'Rick Rogers has yet to play a snap in an NFL game, but he has been asked about more than almost any player on the Indianapolis Colts' roster.
Rogers soon will show if he's able to contribute. He'll be active for the first time this season when the Colts take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
"I've just been doing everything coach [Chuck] Pagano's been asking me and a little bit more," Rogers said. "Coming in early, staying late and putting in the extra work that I need to get acclimated with the offense. Let these guys know that I'm here to learn and help the team out."
Rogers has talent. He led the SEC in receptions (67) and yards (1,040) in his sophomore year at Tennessee.
The Colts have dealt with lack of depth at receiver all season, and since Reggie Wayne went down with a torn ACL in late October, no one has stepped up other than T.Y. Hilton, and even he's struggling now.
So what took the Colts so long to activate Rogers if he's so talented?
"There's an acclimation period," Pagano said. "It's one thing when you're on the card team so to speak, or the look team and you're running the opponent's offense for our No. 1 defense, and then actually once you get brought up and you start working with the 1-offense or the 2-offense or whatever. He's been in meetings and he's been hearing the language, the concepts, routes, all the calls, all those types of things. Until you actually get in and you're working with the offense, it takes a little bit of time.
“Like anybody, we're just going to keep developing and developing and developing. And so now he's at a point where he's picked things up and we're going to put him out there and give him a shot. We know he's a big, athletic, talented guy. So, [we're] more than confident that that kid can go out there and make a play for us.”
The Colts are desperate for help at receiver, so the slightest production from Rogers will be an upgrade. Hilton is the only active receiver on the roster with more than one touchdown this season.
