Free-agent watch: Donald Brown
By Mike Wells
INDIANAPOLIS -- Running back Donald Brown is next on the list Indianapolis Colts' free agents.
2013 stats: 102 attempts, 537 yards and 6 touchdowns
Brown gave an indication of where his head is these days when he seemed to give a farewell message Wednesday morning on Twitter:
It was like Brown was the unwanted stepchild at the start of the season, only to end up being the one everybody loved. He started the season third on the depth chart behind Vick Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw. Brown remained third when the Colts acquired Trent Richardson to team with Bradshaw after Ballard was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
Bradshaw then went down for the season with a neck injury, forcing the Colts to make Brown the backup behind Richardson. Richardson struggled -- and Brown produced with his limited carries -- and coach Chuck Pagano eventually moved Brown into the starting lineup.
Brown ended up leading the Colts in rushing. The former first-round pick showed flashes but he had a difficult time being consistent.
"Yeah, this past season was almost like an interviewing process and now you're just waiting to see what job offers you get," Browns said. "Then just take the one that makes the most sense for myself and my family."
It's understandable why Brown would want to play elsewhere next season. The Colts still hold Richardson in high regard and Ballard will be back next season, which means Brown would likely start out as the third running back -- or insurance back -- again next season. He's proven that he's better than a third back. He's more like a second-string running back.
Prediction: The Jan. 11 playoff game at New England was the last time you'll see Brown in a Colts uniform.
