A note about compensatory picks
By Tania Ganguli
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Part of the business that will be handled today on the first day of league meetings will involve the awarding of compensatory draft picks.
The Texans had two compensatory picks in last year's draft, a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick. They can't be traded and are given at the end of each round.
Last season's picks were based on 2012's free agency when the Texans lost offensive tackle Mike Brisiel, defensive end Mario Williams and tight end Joel Dreessen in free agency. Only players who become free agents and then are signed by other teams count for this tally.
This year's compensatory selections will be based on last year's free-agency period when the Texans had outside linebacker Connor Barwin, safety Glover Quin and punter Donnie Jones depart in free agency. Their marquee free-agency signings were safety Ed Reed and punter Shane Lechler.
