D-Day for Del Rio?
By Paul Kuharsky
By the end of Tuesday, we could know, and should know, the status of Jack Del Rio with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
There are reports out of Southern California, like this one, that say Del Rio has an offer from USC.
But Michael C. Wright maintains Del Rio put in a long day at the Jaguars' facility Monday in meetings with coaches and GM Gene Smith, hardly the sort of thing a coach on his way out would do.
Del Rio will meet with owner Wayne Weaver today.
One important thing to note: If Del Rio leaves, the replacement Smith would hire would be a low-profile, inexpensive up-and-comer, not some bright, shiny, high-dollar star.
I generally lean toward stability in these situations, and think before USC became a factor Del Rio was going to be back. I suspect that is still the case.
I’m not sure Del Rio would get a contract offer from his alma mater without interviewing.
But if he can go to a job he wants with more long-term security, and it gets the Jags off the hook for the $15 million they owe him going forward, perhaps they could regard it as win-win and part ways.
It's a big day in Jacksonville.
