I didn’t mean it as an indictment; it’s just what struck me in my initial look at Bob Bostad (offensive line) and Giff Smith (defensive line).
Now, let’s put a little more context around both of them.
Bostad developed a lot of quality linemen during six years coaching the offensive line at Wisconsin.
Not all of them turned into NFL successes, but that wasn’t Bostad’s job.
Joe Thomas, Kraig Urbik, Marcus Coleman, John Moffitt, Gabe Carimi, Kevin Zeitler, John Oglesby, Travis Frederick and Peter Konz all made the first- or second-team All Big Ten while Bostand coached them.
That’s a big list. Wisconsin was a very good offensive line team, and Bostad was clearly good at developing guys.
Bostad will find plenty of opportunity to develop guys in his new job.
As for Smith ...
His NFL coaching experience was three years in Buffalo, and he didn’t coach last season.
But take note.
The Titans' last great defensive line coach hire, Jim Washburn, joined the franchise with zero years of NFL coaching experience.
