Blackmon needs to be all about football

The Jacksonville Jaguars should get a boost with receiver Justin Blackmon (groin) and rookie safety John Cyprien (hamstring) activated and finally in action.

Blackmon is heading for a four-game suspension to open the season, after he violated the league's substance-abuse policy.

He came on last season and showed what kind of threat he can be. A healthy, available Blackmon paired with Cecil Shorts and working with Ace Sanders and Mike Brown at receiver could make for a quality group.

Too often, Blackmon's drawn attention to himself with nonsense that doesn't have to do with running routes and catching the ball. He had two alcohol-related arrests in the past three years. He's facing the suspension. And Friday night at EverBank Field he got into a verbal altercation with Dolphins defensive back Nolan Carroll.

Jason Babin tried to settle Blackmon down and he apparently turned on his teammate before Maurice Jones-Drew walked Blackmon off the field.

Gus Bradley met with him to sort things out.

The Jaguars open Sept. 8 with a home game against Kansas City. Between now and the start of his suspension, Blackmon needs to make absolutely certain any conversations about him center around just football.
