Penalty report: Houston Texans

11/2/2012

A look at what the Texans have done in the penalty department through seven games:

Totals:

  • 48 penalties, 5 declined penalties, 350 yards, 31 nullified yards, 15 first downs, 7 stalled drives

Primary offenders:

  • CB Johnathan Joseph: 4 penalties (and 1 declined) for 35 yards and 3 first downs

  • RT Derek Newton: 4 penalties for 21 yards, 1 nullified yard, 1 stalled drive

  • CB Brice McCain: 4 penalties (and 1 declined) for 15 yards and 2 first downs

  • Three players have 3 each.

Primary offenses:

  • False starts: 8 penalties for 34 yards and two stalled drives

  • Offensive holding: 7 penalties (and 1 declined) for 60 yards, 7 nullified yards, 1 stalled drive

  • Defensive offsides: 6 penalties (and 1 declined) for 25 yards and 3 first downs

Thoughts:

CB Kareem Jackson is one of the three guys with 3 penalties. So the team's three top cornerbacks are among the top six violators. That would be more of a cause for concern if the three were averaging more than 10.8 yards per penalty.
