It appears San Diego running back/return man Darren Sproles will become an unrestricted free agent if he does not sign a long-term contract with the Chargers before Friday.

The Chargers want Sproles _ who is a threat in the running, receiving and return games – back, but it won’t overspend to keep him. But because Sproles is such a weapon, he could command a big deal elsewhere.

The following is a look if Sproles could be pursued by the other teams in the AFC West:

Denver: Sproles would help Denver, but the Broncos may have more pressing needs. The Broncos are fine at running back and they are average in the return game. Sproles will probably get better offers elsewhere.

Kansas City: This is an interesting one. The Chiefs have had a difficult time selling tickets recently and the former Kansas State star and Olathe, Kansas product would create excitement. This could be a pairing worth watching. The Chiefs would rather have a bigger complement to Jamaal Charles, but Sproles would help the Chiefs’ offense. He’d also give a much-needed burst to the return game.

Oakland: If the Raiders make a move in their crowded backfield, Sproles could be an option. He’d also help the return game. Still, like Denver, Sproles might be a luxury in Oakland that is bypassed for more pressing needs.
