AFC West news and notes

DENVER -- Here are some early Sunday thoughts from around the AFC West:

  • The Chiefs have lost running back Kolby Smith and linebacker Derrick Johnson to injury in the game. Rookie Jamaal Charles took over for Smith. The Chiefs have added running back Jackie Battle to the 53-man roster.

  • Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen scored on a 37-yard pass from receiver Mark Bradley out of the Wildcat formation. That's out of character for conservative offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Good for Gailey. The Chiefs have nothing to lose and they should play like it. Gailey needs to continue with the trick plays.

  • Check out a good Q&A with Chiefs coach Herman Edwards. It includes very interesting thoughts from the coach.

  • The San Diego Union Tribune hands out its midseason grades for the beleaguered 3-5 Chargers. It's not exactly honor roll worthy as expected.
