I wrote earlier that the Broncos’ trade for Cleveland quarterback Brady Quinn was worthwhile, and the price for Quinn was not bad.
Denver gave up running back Peyton Hillis, a sixth-round pick in 2011 and a conditional 2012 pick for Quinn. That is not much.
However, there is risk involved with dealing Hillis. The guy has solid potential. He is a versatile running back, who has good running, receiving and blocking skills. He is also a good special teams player.
Still, Hillis never clicked with Josh McDaniels’ staff. Hillis, a seventh-round pick in 2008, looked like a blossoming standout for former Denver coach Mike Shanahan. Hillis had 343 yards rushing and averaged five yards a carry as a rookie. He was a tough runner, who never gave up. His playing time evaporated in 2009, when had 13 carries.
Last month at the NFL combine, McDaniels said he hoped Hillis would make strides in 2010. Now, he will have a chance to do so in another uniform.
If Cleveland gives Hillis a chance, it may be very pleased with his production. I still like Denver’s move of getting Quinn, but Hillis could help the Browns.
