A report that NFL teams are considering moving JaMarcus Russell from quarterback to another position has caused quite a stir.
RussellI still have a difficult time believing that will happen. I’ve been told interest in Russell is being focused on reconstructing his career as a quarterback. Oakland cut the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft earlier this month.
I caught up with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. to discuss the chances of Russell switching positions. Williamson is not a fan of the idea. Here’s what he had to say:
Williamson: “My short answer is, ‘no, it wouldn’t work.’ I guess it would be as a blocking tight end, but he’s not shown anything to prove he can do that. He doesn’t even work at the position he is good at. Just because he has 30 extra pounds of fat doesn’t mean he is strong enough to move positions. He’s shown no toughness. This is not a superb athlete.”
Williamson thinks Russell will eventually be signed by an NFL team, perhaps during training camp when injuries occur. Still, he thinks Russell may need to think about going to the CFL or UFL to jump-start his career.
“I can’t blame teams for staying away from him at this point," Williamson said. "He’s shown nothing on film. It’s been horrible. Maybe a trip to Canada is what he needs.”
