Kansas City Chiefs
Head coach Todd Haley told Jim Rome that he had a “long talk” with receiver Dwayne Bowe about Bowe’s already infamous words about veterans “importing” women to a team hotel prior to a game in San Diego in 2007.
My take: Bowe, who told the tale in the latest edition of ESPN The Magazine, is catching a lot of heat for his comments. Haley wouldn’t go into the details of his conversation with Bowe, but I’m sure Haley was pretty strong. Because Haley and general manager Scott Pioli were not in Kansas City in 2007, I doubt they are overly upset. Still, I bet Haley reminded Bowe not to let out team issues in public and I’m sure Pioli will make sure an incident like this never happens on future road trips. Bowe’s biggest problem may be in the locker room where trust is sacred.
San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Shawne Merriman’s new agent met with Chargers general manager A.J. Smith to discuss the linebacker’s future.
My take: By all accounts, it appeared to be a positive meeting. There is a lot to sort out. Merriman is a restricted free agent who has yet to sign his tender. He is staying away from OTAs and is not expected to attend next week’s minicamp. There have also been trade talks. Merriman would like a long-term contract to stay in San Diego. That likely won’t happen until after the season and only if he has a huge season. Still, it looks like both sides are feeling good enough about each other to move forward.
