With our AFC West position-by-position rankings complete for the 2010 preseason, we’re going one step further. We’re going to rank the positions in order of strength:
1. Secondary: This is a power group. There is some Hall of Fame talent here.
2. Kickers and punters: The division has the best kickers and punters in the NFL. It’s is stunning how strong this group has become.
3. Running backs: I really like this group. The players are fun to watch and they have plenty of potential.
4. Offensive line: There is a nice mix of young and veteran talent, especially in San Diego and Denver.
5. Linebackers: It has a chance to get better and it is already pretty good.
6. Tight ends: It’s top heavy with Antonio Gates and Zach Miller.
7. Returners: It’s a work in progress, but there’s star power here.
8. Quarterbacks: Philip Rivers is brilliant. Otherwise, it’s a pedestrian group.
9. Receivers: It’s very young and full of questions. It could be a strength in a couple of years, but not now.
10. Defensive line: Just not enough good players. An underwhelming group.
