Ellison, a sixth-round pick last year, started nine games as a rookie. But the Chargers weren’t completely satisfied with him. That became evident when the Chargers drafted Darrell Stuckey in the fourth round this year. He is faster than Ellison and Stuckey has impressed the Chargers’ staff so far. He will compete with veteran Steve Gregory for the starting safety job.
Ellison’s status with the Chargers was further damaged in May when he was caught with 100 Vicodin pills. The team had him stay away from the mandatory minicamp. He didn’t return to the team recently, but he appeared to be on borrowed time.
