Here is a look at why I chose the AFC West teams where I did in the final ESPN.com NFL power rankings:

San Diego Chargers

  • Power ranking: 12
  • Where I ranked them: I had San Diego ranked 13th. I had the 8-8 Chargers ranked higher than all of the non-playoff teams that finished 9-7. Forget the record, the Chargers are going to be very dangerous in the postseason.

Denver Broncos

  • Power ranking: 22
  • Where I ranked them: I had Denver ranked 21st. The Broncos faded down the stretch and blew what was believed to be a certain playoff berth.

Oakland Raiders

  • Power ranking: 26
  • Where I ranked them: I had Oakland ranked 26th. Yes, the Raiders finished with five wins and Raider Nation is ecstatic, but the truth is this team was a disappointment in 2008. Perhaps the Raiders will finally turn the corner in 2009.

Kansas City Chiefs

  • Power ranking: 30
  • Where I ranked them: I had Kansas City ranked 30th. The Chiefs were competitive late in the season but they could never win and with a 2-14 record, they have to be ranked where they are.
