Reviewing the Broncos vs. Lions

Random thoughts from Denver’s 25-20 loss to visiting Detroit on Saturday night:

Kyle Orton continues to look very sharp. Maybe that one-year extension Denver gave him this week is not enough. He has been terrific in the preseason. Orton was 16-of-22 for 177 yards. He did throw a costly interception.

Jabar Gaffney continued to be a favorite target of Orton’s. He had six catches for 98 yards. Expect Gaffney to be a go-to receiver for Orton during the regular season. Rookie Eric Decker made his preseason debut and had five catches for 66 yards. He is a player to keep an eye on.

Backup quarterback Brady Quinn was removed from last week's game. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 115 yards. With Tim Tebow out with a minor rib injury, Quinn will likely hold off the rookie for the backup job at least another week.

Defensively, though, Denver wasn’t very good. The Lions’ first-team offense ate up Denver. The Lions jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Detroit was consistent all game long on offense. It had 241 passing yards and 151 yards rushing.

It is clear Denver’s defense needs some shoring up midway through the preseason.
