ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Seattle Seahawks will either trade or cut receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the next day. A release is the most likely of the two scenarios.
The situation could have a direct impact on the AFC West.
Perhaps other than San Diego (which traded for Dallas’ Patrick Crayton on Friday), the other three teams in the AFC West could all make a play for a receiver. The team in the division that may make the most sense for Houshmandzadeh may be Oakland.
The Raiders have a young receiving group and has long needed a veteran presence, even though coach Tom Cable has said the team has not considered it much.
Houshmandzadeh played for new Oakland offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in Cincinnati. While Houshmandzadeh is no longer in his prime, he could fill an important role for Oakland.
Seattle’s decision to dump Houshmandzadeh could also mean the receiver-hungry team is ready to make a serious push for San Diego holdout receiver Vincent Jackson. The Seahawks have already been given permission to talk to Jackson about a new deal, but those talks stalled. Perhaps this move will reignite those efforts.
