I caught up with Gary Horton of Scouts Inc. on Friday evening to discuss the Chargers’ acquisition of Dallas receiver Patrick Crayton.

San Diego will send a seventh-round pick to the Cowboys for Crayton, who was a salary dump in Dallas. However, if he has more than 40 catches this season, San Diego will send a sixth-round pick.

Crayton will likely be the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver in San Diego. Still, Horton thinks it’s a significant pickup for the Chargers. Crayton helps take pressure of the San Diego offense during the holdout of Pro Bowl receiver Vincent Jackson, Crayton says.

The addition will also help star tight end Antonio Gates stay in his tight end position more. He was working as a glorified receiver often in the preseason.

Here are some of Horton’s thoughts on Crayton becoming a Charger:
“Patrick Crayton for a seventh-round pick? Are you kidding me? He’s a pretty good player. He can give the Chargers some pretty good three-receiver sets with Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee. It allows Gates to stay as a tight end as well instead of flexing out as a receiver. You add (running back) Darren Sproles in receiving sets and multiple tight end sets that San Diego uses and the Chargers now have a lot of options. (Quarterback) Philip Rivers has a lot of toys to play with. Crayton is not Vincent Jackson, but this trade gives San Diego another legitimate receiver and a lot of options again. I really like this trade.”
