There has been speculation in the past few hours since it was announced that Florida coach Urban Meyer was stepping down unexpectedly that he’d end up in Denver and reunite with Tim Tebow.
Don’t expect that to happen.
I understand the speculation. Meyer and Tebow are extremely close and Tebow’s team, the Denver Broncos, have a need for a new coach. Josh McDaniels was fired on Monday. So, the timing certainly could make some people connect the dots.
A Meyer-Tebow reunion in the NFL could be intriguing.
But this pairing won’t happen.
Meyer said in his news conference Wednesday night he has no plans of coaching immediately. He stepped down to be with his family.
Plus, the Broncos wouldn’t fire McDaniels just to reunite Tebow with his college coach. McDaniels and Tebow had a strong relationship. The Broncos’ brass didn’t put Tebow’s future in the equation in making the decision to fire McDaniels.
There is more to the Denver Broncos than Tebow, although the team has plenty of interest in him and it will want to hire a coach who is interested in continuing his development. But Denver wouldn’t fire McDaniels just for the chance to secure Meyer.
Meyer is walking away from Florida to take a breather, not to increase the pressure in his life. So, the whole the timing is interesting, connecting the dots on this one is off base.
