We went divisionwide in this week's "Sound off" as the question was directed to fans of all four teams. The query was simple: Who should your team draft in the first round?
We had hundreds of responses and fans of each team gave strong arguments. Below are some of your responses. Thanks to those who participated.
Roger: trade the #3 pick or if not then take Eugene Monroe...
Anthony from Chicago: Hey Bill, Love the blog. If San Diego is unable to trade down to give AJ a 2nd round pick, the Chargers select Michael Oher with the 16th overall pick. P.S. The reasons below do not have to be included, but I was interested in your opinion on my rationale. -The O-line, especially on the right side, is a need the Bolts can no longer afford to ignore. More likely than not, the . Oher, on the other hand, is still a little bit of a reach for the Redskins at 13. -Tyson Jackson is gone no later than Denver at 12 because BJ Raji won't be there for them. -Malcolm Jenkins is gone at 14 to the Saints (though I would love for the Beanie Wells talk to be true and have Jenkins fall to us as our next FS so we can move Weddle to SS). -Rey Maualuga is a popular pick and as someone who grew up watching Junior Seau, I can see why there is a tendency to want to fall in love with Maualuga. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have a problem if we traded down with the Eagles and took Rey Rey at 21 so they could have Knowshon at 16. However, given the way Maualuga grades out and the fact that ILB is a less pressing 1st round need, I don't think we'd be maximizing value for the 16th pick in this years draft. -Regarding taking a RB in the first round, I will concede that they Moreno and Wells are a good value based on where we are picking. If the draft was only one round long, I'm sold on a RB. However, I think OT 1st round/RB 3rd offers better combinations given the talent pool this year.
Chris from Denver: Bill, since both Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders have no precedence in making a draft choice it is hard to pick an obvious selection for the Denver Broncos. Since our obvious holes are on defense I will presumably go in that direction. #12: (the obvious choice) Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU Instant starter who will be solid if not unspectacular but will hold up against the run and occasionally apply some pressure. One of the cornerstone defensive lineman for the present and future. #18: Everette Brown, WOLB, Florida State Brown will platoon with Elvis Dumerville to form a formidiable pass-rush tandem. He will take time to develop but has all the tools to succeed. Another cornerstone player for the transitioning 3-4 alignment.
Messer from Louisville: KC fan for Sound Off: AFC West Draft People keep thinking we'll take an offensive linemen because the LB value isn't there. It'd be like taking a RG at 5 or something. All I need to do is remember that Branden Albert SHUT DOWN Joey Porter and then I try and make those people sound like fools. Aaron Curry is an awesome LB and I wouldnt mind our drafting him but there is value and opportunity at 3. If we can't trade out my pick would have to be Mark Sanchez. Why not, we traded a 2nd and are currently paying a QB 14 mil when he's not much better than what we currently have. Now we'll have 2 QBs that we don't really need. -kidding- It would force teams to deal with us and because there are so many, there will be deals. The teams would have like 30 minutes to send in their offers and then we get to choose.
Tim from Hickory, N.C.: Bill, there is too much discussion about the Broncos trading up to draft Mark Sanchez. However, I do think there should be discussion about the Broncos packaging the 12th pick and a third round pick to move up to get the guy they really need, BJ Raji. Theyn would still have their 18th pick to get either Tyson Jackson or Rey Maulaluga. Thoughts?
Ross from San Diego: The Chargers, picking at number 16, should be keyed in on one of three players. USC's Rey Maualuga, USC's Brian Cushing, or LSU's Tyson Jackson. The pick, if all three are on the board, should be the Defensive End out of LSU, Tyson Jackson. Why? Because the Chargers have a clear hole on the defensive line with the loss of Igor Olshansky to free agency. The inside linebacker position is one of weakness, yes, but it also has starting-caliber players. Matt Wilhelm, Tim Dobbins, Stephen Cooper, Brandon Siler, and newly signed Kevin Burnett will all compete for two of those inside spots. On the defensive end side, there's no clear starter with Igor's departure. The addition of Jackson will provide the Chargers with a solid starter who will both be stout against the run and a dominant pass rusher, which will be all the more dangerous with a healthy Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Jamal Williams, and Luis Castillo. That's why Jackson should be the pick.
Jackson: The Chiefs need defensive help its obvious but I think its just too tempting here not to take an OT. Taking Smith or Monroe takes us from having one of the weakest OL in the NFL to probably a top 5 OL. Whether its insurance if Waters is going to go or moving Albert to RT for one of the best offensive lines in football. Oakland needs help all over the field but their biggest need is to see if Russell is the guy at QB and the only way to do that is to give him weapons to work with. If Russell flops then you at least still have an offensive star to build around. Denver has holes all over the field but with their picks they need 3-4 players on the line and at linebacker. San Diego has the fewest holes but can use this picks to shore up a position for the long term. Kansas City: Eugene Monroe Oakland: Michael Crabtree(might be better off with Raji because they have a bif need at run stop d as well) Denver: Tyson Jackson(the only 3-4 DL player left on the board worth looking at) SanDiego: Rey Maualuga(giving San Diego one of the best LB core in the league) Denver: Brian Cushing(or Ayers if he drops?)
Joe from Columbus: At the #7 pick, I'm hoping for either Crabtree or Raji. J. Smith & Monroe will be gone. Maclin is an expensive version of JL Higgins. Orakbo is the next Longhorn to flame out. So hopefully we will luck into Crabtree or Raji
Kevin G. from Santee: the chargers have got to go defense in the first round. They could add depth at O-line or running back, bu their offense was very good last year and their defense was horrible. Tyson would be a great pick for defensive end because his big strong stature would suck blockers toward him and away from the pass rushing linebackers. If not Jackson, then Maualuga at middle line backer would be great, they could use a fast, strong, high-energy guy to help stop the run.
McLeansville: Defensive lineman who is a great pass rusher. With Merriman back the Charger D will be better than ever.
Garrett from Denver: The dream scenerio for the Broncos would have to be BJ Raji at #12 and Tyson Jackson at #18. This is probably a long shot because of so much interest in both players earlier in the round, but these two could be solid players on the broncos defense for years to come. The Broncos have to get atleast one of these guys. If Raji is gone I would like to see them take Jackson at #12 and then maybe Malcom Jenkins at #18. Picking up the big nose tackle in the 2nd round like Ron Brace from BC.
Branden from Brisbane, Australia: I really hope the chargers pick Rey Maualuga. While there are some other good choices on the board at the time. I don't see Tyson Jackson falling past the Broncos. A hard hiting MLB to take the place of Wilhelm and Merriman hopefully back without injury would make the chargers defense one to be feared.
Andy from Denver: broncos with 12 pick: must take raji if he falls or orakbo if he does. if not, then the broncos witht heir two picks need to get 2 guys out of the group of jackson, mauluga, maybin, cushing, brown. I think they'll go Jackson and Mauluga
Felipe from Rio de Janeiro: The Oakland Raiders select WR Michael Crabtree. Al Davis is not THAT obsessed with 40 yard dashes. He's one of the smartest people in the NFL and he'll see the incredible talent that Crabtree has. Crab is a tough, physical, sure-handed WR who will give Jamarcus Russell a go-to-guy rightaway.
Andy: The Chiefs at #3, what would it take for teams to trade up who need a quarterback? Teams needing Mark Sanchez include Denver, Jets, Washington, etc. Are they still deciding about trading Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for a 2nd rounder and what trade value does Walters have?
Jerry from Kansas City: Bill, I read your blogs every day and appreciate you taking the time. While I like Aaron Curry at the #3 spot, I think that Crabtree would also be a legitimate option because 1) he would be an oustanding weapon opposite D-Bowe(who as established himself as a legitimate #1 receiver), 2) if we are able to lock Tony G in and keep him for another couple years, it would give Matt Cassel a great trio of recievers to throw to with Crabtree, D-Bowe and Tony G, with Jeff Webb as a nice #3 and 3) with Larry Johnson looking like he is coming around (i.e. showing-up at the KC voluntary mini camps), our offense coulde be what Matt Cassel needs to thrive in an enrivonment where we have won just six games in two seasons. I know there are substantial needs on defense and Curry would make an immediate impact, but my question to you is if the Chiefs were planning on drafting a starting linebacker with the #3 pick, why would Pioli bring in veteran linebackers for at most a couple of years? Is he trying to turn our offense into what it was in the early 2000s and bringing in senior leadership on defense while seeing what defensive players could possibly be available next year or the year after? I personally like Sean Weatherspoon from Mizzou, but I am bias, of course, being a Mizzou fan. Am I way off or could I possibly be thinking what could very well happen?
Jeffrey from Wichita: I say that the best scenario for Kansas City is to trade with down to san fran, who needs to replace alex smith and wants to jump in front of seattle, trade for their first, second, and either a veteran, or later round pic, then trade back up with jacksonvile with the 10 and a third or 4th round pic to get up to 8 and take Micheal Crabtree in the first round, then a center like Alex Mack or another lineman with their second and/or other middle round selections. what do you think
Daylon from Wyoming: 12, 18, and every other pick in this draft.........get us a defense!!!
James from Tucson, Ariz.: I am a Chargers fan and I would love for Tyson Jackson to fall to the Chargers but I think that the Broncos will get Jackson at 12. If the Broncos pick Jackson then I would like the Chargers to pick Rey Maualuga out of USC. He would be an amazing addition to the Chargers linebacking corps with Merriman, Cooper, and Phillips.
Marietta, Ga.: I think that the Broncos might go after Josh Freeman if he is around late. I have heard that he is fairly bright; a pre-req to be a successful pro QB.
Chuy from San Jose: With the 7th pick in the 2009 draft the Oakland Raiders select Michael Crabtree from Texas Tech University. Jamarcuss, D-Mac, Miller, Bush, and Crabtree. A improved line on paper at least. A coach that seems very committed. I think the Raiders are going in the right direction!!!!
