Gruden is following Madden's footsteps

John Madden -- a former popular Oakland head coach -- just ended a superstar broadcasting career.

Another former Oakland coach may also have just started a legendary broadcasting career. Jon Gruden has been added to ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast team.

What a perfect hire. Gruden is one of the great characters and personalities in football.

If he chooses, he will have a long career on Monday Night Football. He is bright, he is funny and plays well to the camera. Expect many a chuckle during Mondays this fall.

Every time I've talked to Gruden, I've come away with a smile on my face. He's just fun to talk to.

Gruden first showed the NFL his charisma as a young Raiders' coach. He was a folk hero (much like Madden) in Oakland because of his fiery sideline antics. He also made the Raiders relevant again in the late 1990s before leaving them for Tampa Bay in 2002. Gruden ended his first season in Tampa by beating Oakland in the Super Bowl.

Gruden still remains a favorite in Oakland. Just like Madden.
