Maurice Pendleton from Kansas City wants to know if the Chiefs will have a legitimate pass rush this season.BW: Great question, Maurice. I'm truly unsure how Kansas City is going to improve in this area. The Chiefs need major improvements when it comes to their pass rush. The Chiefs set an NFL record for the fewest sacks in a season with 10 in 2009. Yes, 10. The Chiefs didn't add any proven pass rushers this offseason. Their top pick, defensive end Tyson Jackson, is known more as a run stopper. Perhaps moving Tamba Hali to outside linebacker (he previously played defensive end) in the 3-4 defense will help. If not, it may be another sack-less season in Kansas City again.
Cindi Lowe wants to know where and when former Denver coach Mike Shanahan next coach.
BW: I think Shanahan will almost certainly coach in the NFL again in 2010. He should be one of the first coaches pursued next January. Shanahan told some friends he is itching to get back after being suddenly fired in Denver after 14 seasons. It is difficult to tell where he will end up because we are not sure what teams are going to be in the market for new leadership. But if the Redskins and Cowboys fail this season, Shanahan could easily end up in Washington or Dallas. Both teams have solid offensive pieces, which would appeal to Shanahan. Both teams have owners who would love to make a splash by hiring a coach of Shanahan's stature. Here's a long shot to watch -- Chicago. If the Bears falter, perhaps ownership would be tempted to reunite Jay Cutler and Shanahan. Shanahan is from Chicago and he'd likely jump on the chance to guide the Bears.
Jesse from Chula Vista wants to know if the Chargers would trade quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.
BW: I don't know if there would be any urgency. Whitehurst has some nice potential and yes, he is behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek in San Diego, but you never know. He may be worth San Diego's while to keep him. Unless Whitehurst plays lights out in the preseason and the Chargers were offered a high draft pick for him, it may not be worth trading him. That scenario is doubtful. I don't think many teams would give a high draft choice from someone who has been a No. 3 quarterback.
Joe from Sacramento wants to know when Champ Bailey's contract expires and how much it'll take Denver to re-sign him.
BW: Bailey signed a seven-year, $63 million deal with Denver after he was acquired from Washington in 2004. Thus, he has two more seasons on his contract. Bailey will be 31 in less than two weeks. He has plagued by injuries last season. The Broncos will want to see if he can hold up and still be an elite player before giving him a new deal. Thus, he will likely play out his contract unless he has a great 2009 season. Bailey is capable. He was playing very well before he injured his groin in October. Bailey is still a top-flight player, I'm just not sure if he will get a big deal soon.
