SAN DIEGO -- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said goodbye to a friend Friday when the San Diego Padres traded ace pitcher Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.
Peavy and Rivers became good friends over the past few years. Both athletes are from Alabama. Rivers said the two didn't meet until they both came to San Diego. Rivers said he texted Peavy a couple of times Friday after the trade to wish him luck.
"It's tough to see him go," Rivers said Saturday. "We became friends and our wives hang out some. I'm sure he would have liked to stay here for the 18 years, but that's the not the way it always goes ... We're pretty similar. A quarterback and pitcher, there are a lot of similarities there and we really hit it off."
Perhaps Peavy was giving a nod to his friend Friday when he attended his farewell press conference wearing a Chargers' hat and T-shirt.
