Earlier Friday, we looked at a Denver Post piece in which new Denver coach John Fox spoke of his quarterback situation.
FoxHowever, buried in the piece was an interesting nugget from Fox that shows exactly what his mindset is. He said running back will be the team’s “No. 1 priority” in free agency. For a team that that was No. 32 in defense last year and that is in dire need of defensive tackle help, that is quite a statement.
The Broncos have 2009 first-round pick Knowshon Moreno, who has struggled to stay healthy and to show he can be a workhorse. Clearly, Denver is looking help for Moreno. The free-agent running backs (depending on how the new CBA is designed) Denver will look at could include DeAngelo Williams, Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown. DeAngelo Williams played for Fox in Carolina.
Whoever is brought in, Fox clearly has high expectations. Check out what he added in the interview with the Denver Post:"We will have the most sophisticated running team in the league."
That’s big words for a coach who is not known for being boastful. In Carolina, Fox had a reputation for being a coach who ran the ball first. These comments show that he wants to do the same in Denver. This has to excite Broncos’ fans. The Broncos were known for having the best running game during the 14-year Mike Shanahan era that ended in 2008. The Broncos’ run game dropped off severely in the two-year Josh McDaniels’ era.
Restoring the run in Denver appears to be Fox’s top priority.
