Free agency will be nothing less than crazy when it begins and there will be all kinds of names that get bandied about.

Let’s look at a name that could fit for the San Diego Chargers: San Francisco 49ers linebacker Manny Lawson. I’ve talked to some people in the know who think the Chargers could look at Lawson as a possible free-agency pickup. He’d reunite with new San Diego defensive coordinator and former San Francisco defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.

Lawson is a solid player and the Chargers could use him as an outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme. He had just 2.5 sacks last season, but he is a high-effort player. The 2005 first-round pick has started 56 games in his career. He has 14.5 career sacks. I asked Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. if he thinks Lawson could fit in San Diego, and he said he thinks it makes sense.

“Shaun Phillips is quite strong on the other side and San Diego very much needs to find a complement for Phillips,” Williamson said. “Lawson would fit that bill. He’s obviously a talent, being a former first-round pick. He is a long, lean body type. He doesn't register a ton of sacks, but he does get pretty consistent pressure.”

Lawson is also a dominant special teams player, which would have to interest San Diego, which is trying to rebuild on special teams. If the price is right, Lawson could be a fit in San Diego.
